Yep, my Kid's hitting coach teaches the same thing (he's a former minor league player)
"Letting it get deep" is a good way to have it end up getting into the catcher's mitt
Even "letting it travel" on outside pitches has been largely disproven. Video & technology are your friends
Deep is relative. Video shows that pros make contact around the front foot. I think teaching that makes much more sense than teaching in regard to home plate because the front foot strike point varies from hitter to hitter.
But contact way ahead of the front foot or behind the front knee is both bad, so I would not talk about out front or deep.
Let it get deep is just a Que for hitters. Let it travel is the same thing. Many hitters will make the decision to swing too early. Some hitters don't track the baseball deep enough. It is a Que used to get hitters to focus on letting the baseball get deep enough so you can HIT it.
When does a breaking pitch break? When does a cutter cut? When does a slider - slide? Hitting is about being on TIME. Too late or too early is not where you want to be. Too far out in front or too far behind equals not hitting consistently enough. Be on time.
Most people don't know what they are talking about and just repeat what everyone else says, so they appear to know. Elbow up, swing level, good grief!
