Just for fun, list ONE attribute of a good HS baseball coach and team.  Go ahead and explain why you listed it if you want, but no more than one each.

I'll go first.

ORGANIZED-Teams that are organized in practice and game day just have an edge. It's a relatively simple thing, but one that gets left at the station far too often.  Heck I can remember back to my own youth baseball days...the teams that were the most organized were almost always the best teams too.

Ok, you're it!

COMMUNICATION:

A coach who clearly tells players what to expect, what's expected of them, how playing time is earned, how to get better, etc. ... and provides a format for players to communicate with him.

I think it helps a lot at the lower levels if the coach also communicates these things to the parents (what to expect from the season, the coach, and their player... what's expected from parents about getting their players to practices and games etc.). But by the high school level, most communication should go thru the players.

UNITY:

I like to see the coach and the team operating as a unit.  All have the same goal and while they have different responsibilities during the game, they work well together.  While 1-2 players may contribute more to the win (or the loss) during a single game, the feeling of accomplishment or the burden of a loss reverberates from one end of the dugout to the other.  They win as a team and they lose as a team.

Passion

I want someone who loves the game and love coaching. Sometimes a HS coach might do it for the money or as a favor for his friend the AD. That would be better than no team at all but not a good thing for a passionate player. He should be there everyday at 3 oclock because he wants to be there more than anywhere else.

Knowledge of the game:

While there is probably no one trait that makes for a great HS coach, I do think that knowledge of the game is paramount.  Too many times I see or hear of HS baseball coaches that are not "baseball" guys. Strategy plays such and important role in baseball, I would think that someone that understands and can teach that aspect of the game would gain instant credibility with high school players (and parents).

Good thread justbaseball.... and very important.  I smiled when I read the different attributes the different posters look for in a coach and a team.  Very good responses!

Years ago a friend of mine was "drafting" players for a young rec team and I was discussing what he looked for in players.  He named the standard things... athleticism, good arm, etc.... and then he said "After all the "real players" are drafted and the "participants" are the only ones left I draft the ones with good looking MOMS...
