There's a couple of theories.  Toman went after the Maryland job hard a couple of years ago and he may have bigger aspirations,  he may be looking for an SEC or ACC job.  The other thought is he is a great recruiter but not a great game coach or player developer and that while he has raised Liberty's profile nationally, he's taken the program as far as he can and the expectations at Liberty are to compete for National Championships, not Big South championships.

Whatever he is a good guy and I wish him well.  He has left with the jar full, so to speak.  There's plenty of talent there now and coming in next year.  With the facilities, the backing of the administration and the almost unlimited budget it's going to be a very sought after job.

coc,

Thanks for sharing those theories.   The theory about expectations caught my attention especially since Coastal Carolina has pretty much owned the Big South and finds their way to the National Championship games tomorrow.  Coaches and ADs talk extensively about winning national championships to their alumni and fan base, but reality is another matter.  I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer but shouldn't winning the conference mean more (take it away from CCU) since only one or a couple teams make the 64 team field.  I'm just being realistic.  Winning a regional and hosting a Super Regional would exceed my expectations fro Liberty and probably most people who follow college baseball.  Do you think the CWS expectation might be a little high at this point and they need to learn to walk before run?  Could a few coaches not be interested because of those extremely lofty (my opinion) and unrealistic expecations?

^^^^  To add, many colleges have challenges when recruiting (lack of money, lack of facilities, high academic requirements).  While Liberty seems to be able to avoid those obstacles, they have there own unique Christian atmosphere that some/most players may not want to live under for 3-5 years, including  CWS caliber players.

In addition, the (free) tuition waiver from LCA ended, thus ending a pipeline for (mostly) Christian walk-ons, which had to be easier recruits.

I never understood why Toman took that job to begin with.  Had he hung around Columbia another year or two he would probably have an ACC or SEC job by now.  If this is truly about "expectations" by the Liberty faithful, they need to get more realistic, especially in the short term.  It has taken Gary Gilmore 20 years to get Coastal to this position, and may take another 20 to do it again.  Nobody is going to get Liberty there any time soon.  Liberty is not going to be every coach's , or player's, cup of tea.  Toman did a good job under the circumstances.  He will land on his feet.  Liberty may or may not.
