And of the 26 players listed on their roster, Longwood has 22 from the state of VA! That's nearly 10% of the total of D1 players from the state on all of the D1 squads. How do you explain that, 1943? Coach Myers better start taking lessons from Coach Bolding!
Grasscutter, I wouldn't even attempt to explain anything because someone would twist what I say.
However, you might find it interesting that 66% of the coaching at Longwood comes from the beach. Could they have won because Mooney from Salem and McCullough from PA are now coaching at Longwood?
Seems ODU pithching this year especially the buulpen is taking it on the chin. I've noticed that they have given up a lot of runs in the late innings. They score runs but can"t seem to get the holds required to get the W's. I am surprised to see this when Coach Meyers is considered one of the top pitching coachs in the region. Maybe he is just not able to get enough quality arms into the program that can shutdown these offenses.
The bullpen taking it on the chin is an understatement. They are struggling every game, guess that is why Meyers keeps the starters in so long. It would be great if some of the "quality arms" were healthy. Hopefully, with fingers crossed, some will be healthy in the very near future. As you well know, DCHEAT, the Cox kid can make an immediate impact next year. If Harris(Hickory) could have a good outing, if, if, if,........
I haven't looked at their overall pitching stats, but it would not surprise me in the least that McCullough is having an impact. Lots of energy and a great kid. That was one hell of a pickup for that staff.
We are going to try and keep him on the right track and have him with the mind set of doing just that. I think with Cox and Ward coming in next year along with the other signees who I can't really talk about b/c I have not seen them but have heard some good things the bullpen should get a liitle help.
I can attest to the bullpen problems having seen a bulk of the games this year. If your offense gives you 6 to 10 run leads going into the 7th or 8th and you lose those games it's a tough task to stay motivated.
I think there are more reasons Brett Harris isn't doing as great this year but that's just speculation. I've heard there was some off-season trouble.
There are more than a few pitchers that showed up to school hurt and haven't pitched in two years. Kudos to Coach Meyers for allowing them time to rehab. Many programs wouldn't do that. I'm hearing that all those pitchers will be ready to go next year and we should see some better numbers from the hurlers.
Defensively I think the field is pretty solid even with the seniors leaving.
Would be nice to see more interest in the program at ODU....not many more people in the stands than parents and friends of the players. Little fan base makes for boring home games, although they are winning much more at home this year than away.
All in all I'm thinking next season will be an exciting one. I know we aren't done yet and I feel that we may go on a bit of a win streak here soon.
