"Briefly" could mean, play on. In OBR it say's it has to remain out of play. So a ball sticking between F2's chest protector and belt buckle, he grabs it and plays, we're playing.

Goes up inside the protector where he'd have to search, one base for everybody, B too if B4 or K3.

OBR:
5.09 The ball becomes dead and runners advance one base, or return to their bases,
without liability to be put out, when—
(g) A pitched ball lodges in the umpire’s or catcher’s mask or paraphernalia, and
remains out of play, runners advance one base;
