While I'd agree there are very good high school coaches that might be good candidates, I'm not sure I'd hire one of them over the list of highly qualified COLLEGE coaches whose names are being tied to this opening.

Remember that responsibilities of coaching at the college level go way beyond the foul lines. Its comparable to running a million dollar company.  Not just about filling out a lineup card.

It will be interesting to see if Graham is right about "protocol".  Or if hiring the youngest head coach in D1 baseball was done just to please the former head coach & now LU is ready to make a move forward in the conferance.

I bet we know one way or the other by June 15.  Somebody bump this up when some info is known.

I completely agree with this.  The differences between running and high school program and a college program are immense.

I never understood why Longwood didn't open up the search initially (I know nothing about McCullough so this isn't meant as any commentary about him)

Farmville is within two by hours of Richmond, Charlottesville, Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Raleigh. Within three hours of Hampton Roads and northern VA. It's not elite academically but fits nicely in the middle and has plenty of major options that would be attractive to potential athletes. To me it could be a sleeping giant in a great situation now with conference membership.

I think just basic due diligence on a job like this would lead to opening things up to a broader pool of candidates.

As to the posting, Longwood is a state institution, so the rules governing state employees do require posting even if we might all feel like "the fix is in" for a particular guy already.

As to opening the position up:  Whether that works or not depends on how much they have budgeted for the position and the program.  A younger guy getting his first shot at the head job may well be a great choice for a host of reasons, including continuity, being a known (and presumably respected and appreciated) quantity, etc.  But that also describes a guy you could probably get for a lot less money than someone with a deeper resume, no?

While at VMI he certainly helped Coach Ikenberry assemble some very good teams.
