My son plays high school ball for a small private school and also for a travel team in the Baltimore Metro League. He is currently a Junior and has been invited to play at the Blue Grey at Virginia Tech in August. I'm looking for suggestions from experienced baseball parents on what other things we can do to help him get exposure. He is a very young junior and many of the boys on his travel team are sophomores. Because of that, I don't think the travel team plans to do many showcases this fall. All info/suggestions are appreciated.

Where is your son looking to go to school? If he wants to go to California, well you're just wasting your money with Blue/Grey. I would also say from my perspective that unless your son is DI material, you are also wasting your money unless your son has contacted a coach from a school and has gotten feedback that he or an assistant will be there to scope out your son. We went to Blue/Grey in NC last August and have not had any contact from any school at that event. My son looks to be DIII material because of his size and speed. If I had to do it over again right now, I would have had my son go to Perfect Game and gotten a nationally recognized rating or gone to College Select as he will probably attend a Northeastern school. Please also understand that I am not bashing Blue/Grey, they may work for many it's just that they haven't for us. Most of the schools there at that showcase were DI schools and if your son ain't at that level well you will see what I mean.
If he is looking at VA schools, then by ALL means go to the Best in VA showcase/camp - You cannot beat the price for what you get. If you are looking at Maryland schools or whoever will be there, go to the Southern Maryland Camp - you can look at the schools attending on their web site. If you are looking Northeast, then attend College Select for sure (and they also extend beyond that region).
Perfect Game is nationally recognized and would be good for your son too (based on what I have seen of others who went and from what I've read from others).
You have to market yourself to a school or a group of schools. This is a business - if Princeton is where your son wants to go and they are not at any showcase your son is at and you have not contacted them, how will they know that your son even exists?
You also would look to do a showcase travel team this fall. Again, will that team expose your son to schools he would like to attend? If not, find another if you can. Also make sure the college coaches know you will be at this or that event and try to develop communication with them (this means your son to do this not you).
Hope this helps.

Tim,

Thanks for the feedback. Joey is looking to attend a college in the MD, VA, PA, or WV area. As for what level, his pitching coach has given us feedback to realistically look at lower tier DI or DII schools. I will look into the other suggestions you have in your posting. Time becomes the issue and choices must bring the maximum benefit as he plays with his travel team til the end of July-beginning of August and then picks back up again in September. We really have about three weeks off to do something outside the regular schedule.
Renate, if your son is a good student you should look at a showcase we have here in Jersey that is run by John Wilson of the NJ Twins. You can go to NJtwins.com and look for the Academic Showcase. It is smaller and less expensive than the big showcases. Not too far from you. It is well run and he gets about 40 scouts from high academic schools (Ivies, and other good NE schools). Very well run, less intimidating and really not expensive compared to some.We went last year, my son was sophomore. It was a good experience. We will be there this year. August 4th and 5th.
Elite Baseball is pleased to announce June 9-10 as the date for the Elite Baseball College Showcase. The showcase will take place at Clipper Magazine Stadium, home of the 2006 Atlantic League Champion, Lancaster Barnstormers.

This showcase will be attended by Division I, II, III, NAIA and JUCO scouts along with Professional scouts. In fact, Elite Baseball will guarantee over 15 scouts from NY, PA, MD, VA, NC and TN regions.
