Yes, the Cosby/Bird game was a pitchers duel with lots of Ks and very few walks. Both pitchers were on top of their games this early in the season. If you like a pitcher's duel this was the game for you. It had a district playoff feel to it with the number of fans, college recruiters, pro scouts, as well as Motoaca team & Clover Hill baseball teams scouting the game. There wasn't much room to sit.

I understand the Manchester/James River game was just as exciting. You have the Manchester team with their load of talent and senior experience. My understanding is James River is starting a lot of talented sophomores....so they are the young guns in the district. James River took them to the wire.

I was at most of the Henrico-Cosby game. Mansfield threw well for Henrico...they played well defensively, made all the plays, and came up with some hits in big spots. Cosby started a sophomore who had pretty good stuff but struggled a bit with command. Cosby seemed to constantly have runners on base but couldn't get them in, while Henrico didn't seem to have as many runners but they made them count when they got on.

Henrico does have nearly everyone back from last year, and their 2-3-4 hitters are all 3 or 4 year starters and are also their top 3 pitchers, so they are going to be better than expected I think.

Henrico did get bit by a little bad luck...in the top of the 7th, they got their leadoff hitter (#2 batter in the lineup) on base, who promptly attempted to steal 2nd, but the hitter swung away and flew out, so the runner returned to first. Then, they put on the hit and run with their #4 hitter, who hit a line drive right to where the second baseman had vacated, perfectly executing the hit and run except for one thing...the ball was hit hard enough that the runner stealing second couldn't avoid it and was stuck right in the back. So instead of 1st and 3rd one out, they had runner on 1st two outs and didn't score.
James River started sophomore Nate Kirby and he shut out Manchester for 4 innings before giving up 3 in the 5th. Manchester got a walk-off from Chris Ayers in the 8th to win it. Wish I had been there.

I agree, JR is competitive this year, better next year, potentially dominating in 2012. Very strong sophomore group coming through the pipeline there and when you realize Kirby has two more years to develop you have to wonder where that is going.
