Does anyone have any insight into the Baseball Program at Lynchburg College? Any additional info on the School is greatly appreciated! I did a search but didn’t see much recent information.

My youngest son attended Lynchburg for a few semesters. As parents we were not pleased; mostly for the lack of institutional awarness as to the well being of the kids.

My son lived in an "athletes dorm." This was a nightmare. WAY TOO MUCH ALCOHOL. They did nothing to supervise the kids which led to too much academic failure. Of the kids my son started (teammates) with not a single one made it past the sophomore year.

It is a lovely campus in a strange town (Liberty University and its culture).

My wife and I consider letting our son attend this school to be the biggest mistake that we made as parents.
Interesting comments ILVBB and I appreciate you sharing. Was this something you experienced recently? I thought they had an incoming Freshman program that required a Frosh to live in a certain Dorm?

Very familiar with the Town of Lynchburg so no surprises for us there.

At any rate, that information gives us as parents some pretty pointed questions to ask.
We met with the assistant coach at Lynchburg College for a tour a couple of months ago. I think the aftermath of what ILVBB stated was felt because the coach said that the team has instituted a no alcohol policy.

My son knows one of the guys on the team, so I can ask him for information about the program. The only negative for my son is that the college is too close to home.

A work colleague has a son who graduated last Spring from Lynchburg College and has only good things to say about the education he received there. If your son is interested in physical therapy or any of the health sciences, Lynchburg College is starting to excel in that area.

Hope this helps and I'll provide an update after I talk to my son about what he knows about the baseball program.

VaRHPmom,

Any more information you can share is greatly appreciated as well. Health Sciences is an area my son is interested in so that is a positive for us. We will be visiting the campus soon so we will get a first hand look at everything and as I said before, we will also be asking very pointed questions.

I appreciate the input from everyone!
I can't weigh in on the academic part but I can give my opinion on the baseball as my college is in the same conference. As far as facilities, they were nice. The field was well taken care of and if I remember correctly, they had cages sheltered by a roof on the side. They are a solid team year in and year out and almost always near the top. They looked like a fun team and a good group of guys and I enjoyed playing them. Definitely a solid place to play at our level.
Lynchburg College has a rich baseball history. I am sorry for the negative experiences mentioned here, but at some point players are responsible for themselves, especially when they are in college. I grew up in Lynchburg and know very many successful and prominent LC alumni, including more than a few who had meaningful careers in professional baseball. Jeff Taylor's son was a Lynchburg College player.

As for Lynchburg, it is a smaller city with a rich southern culture, located midway between Charlottesville (UVa) and Blacksburg (Virginia Tech). It is the true heart of Central Virginia, a beautiful part of the country.

Liberty has built a positive presence in the city over the years, but it in no way dominates the city. It remains an important part of the landscape, but only a part.

LC, which has a stunning campus and widespread community support, can be a great place to play for a responsible young adult. If a kid has problems, the first place to look is the mirror -- just as is the case at any other school.

I have toured LC twice, once on an in depth "Blue Ridge Mountain Colleges" tour with a group of counselors, and I had the chance to have lunch with some deans and faculty. My impressions were all very very favorable. Supportive and caring administration and faculty. A place that would nurture a kid. Lovely campus, beautiful countrysie, facilities are well maintained, seems like it has good resources for students and faculty, and I think I also recall a strong media / communications program in an impressive facility as a highlight. Did it also have an environmental studies program and an off campus preserve?? (I might be mixing up my VA colleges but I think that was Lynchburg).

If I recall, there is a religious feel to the campus to some extent, but not at all in the category of its neighboring university, Liberty. (No offense intended with that comment. But Lynchburg even says that families sometimes confuse the 2, so it is important to know the differences.)

I often refer kids to Lynchburg when they are touring the VA/NC smaller, country schools. It is nice to have a quality option down there, and know it is a place that still values an "average" academic student that shows potential to grow. And a more 'above average' student will get some merit money.

(This is not to deny the experiences encountered in that earlier post .... it is important to know the bad and the good, and to ask hard questions based on that.)
Funny....my son's older school, NC Wesleyan just played Lynchburg yesterday. My younger son is very also interested in them. Their pitching coach is a guy that used to pitch for Marist University and extremely knowledgeable. There is no yelling at the kids just a lot of good one on one coaching on the field and kids are treated like young adults. Very impressive program and classy coaches.
