Lynnhaven Baseball coming off their runner-up finish in the Palomino World Series in California will be looking for top-level players this summer, ages 17-19. Players are eligible from Richmond to Southampton. Our season will start the first week of June for players out of High School playoff contention.

We are the premier non-showcase team in Virginia and one of the best in the Country.

After being associated with Pony Baseball and NABF for the past seven years, including trips to World Series Events in Puerto Rico, Mississippi, and three consecutive trips to California, Lynnhaven will join up with Dixie Baseball in hopes of making it to our first World Series involving that organization.

Our returning team looks to be strong and I believe we will make a run at the World Series again.

Good luck to all players this spring as the College and High School seasons are just around the corner.

For what it's worth, I'll give my endorsement for Lynnhaven. I played on the team last year after my freshman year of college and couldn't have asked for a better experience. I pitched over the course of the college season and my arm was tired, I let Coach Billy know that before the season started and he got me plenty of innings and playing time at a position instead.
Both Billy and Coach Jerry are two class act coaches who know their stuff and want to win. They make the summer fun and it rivals any showcase team you could play on. We played top competition around here and in Pittsburgh and in California. It was an incredible experience and a blessing to be a part of.
Now that I'm too old to play on the tournament team, Billy has gone out of his way to help me contact summer league coaches and help get me placed on another team for the summer. You really couldn't find two better guys to play for or a group of guys to play with.

@El Gato - We are just putting our hats in another arena. We will probably register NABF (only wood bat) as well to keep options open for our kids.

Jerry and I have put our heart and soul into the Palomino Program over the past seven years and Pony Baseball for the past twenty. Most have been outstanding experiences including all the World Series Events and this past summer coaching the Pony USA Baseball - Tournament of Stars Team in Cary, NC. What a great experience to coach some of the best baseball players in the Country and to see the 18U National Team go on to win the Gold Medal for the Country.

However, we feel that Pony Baseball across the board is starting to go in a different direction (PC Version) than we feel is best for the players in our program.

Dixie Baseball is all across the South, including Virginia. Last year the World Series was held in Alabama and this year is scheduled for Mississippi. The only major difference is Pony is International and Dixie is not.

@ATP - Jerry and I wish you all the best - you were an outstanding player and even better person....wish we could have you back again. If you do decide to stay at home this summer, you are more than welcome to play wood bat.

Just a follow-up as we are now in full-swing of the high school season.

Lynnhaven Baseball is looking forward to the upcoming summer season and hopefully another successful tournament run, no matter the organization we decide to play under. We will register with 3 or 4 organizations and keep our options open until 1 July when we have to make our decision.

For those that haven't heard, American Legion in the Tidewater Area is suspended for the 2012 season on the Southside. I believe Greenbriar Post 280 may try to stay together and travel to the other side of the water and play. But any players out there, that doesn't have a place to play, you are more than welcome to come play within our program.

Could you clarify the reasons for the "suspension"? Just curious. My son's played for Post 89 (King George) for the past two summers.
To clarify... Southside Post 280 Greenbrier WILL BE PLAYING AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL AGAIN THIS SUMMER. The team's home games will be played at Oscar Smith High.

"Southside" players with any interest in playing for the 280 Greenbrier team, there will be an announcement in May in regards to a tryout.

Between 280 Greenbrier & Lynnhaven Baseball, young men who have competed in legion baseball last year will still have opportunities to play high-level baseball this summer.

As far as the "suspension," that may the wrong wording.

Technically, District 2 (Southside District) will be joining District 3 (Peninsula) this year. It comes from an early deadline for local coaches/posts to designate that they will definitely be forming a senior team. This year, as of the end of Feb./beginning of March, there were just a couple of "definite" teams. Since that time, one of those dropped out, and thus the guys with District 2 had no choice but to join with District 3 for the upcoming season.

I personally think that if the deadline were a little later, there might be more teams forming as some coaches may not have summer plans for their programs set in stone yet... but that's just my 2 cents.

First, thanks to Smith for the additional information on legion. I'm happy that 280 will have a team. Between Lynnhaven and 280, our area has been represented very well over the past couple of years!

Lynnhaven WILL have a team this summer. We just may play under a different organization like NABF, Connie Mack, Dixie, or Pony. We are exploring our options to what is the best for our players.

As I understad it, Lynnhaven will have a "Palmino" aged team but it will not necessarily be affiliated with Pony Baseball (and, thus, called Palmino).

Billy, please correct me if I am wrong.
Redbird,

We still may affilate with Pony - but we are exploring other options.

Pony (in the Palomino) Division has changed over the past eight seasons. It's costing the leagues more and getting less in return. It is costing twice as much to travel these days and they do not provide any assistance unless you get to the World Series. Then if you lose at the World Series Event before the last day, you and your team are left paying for the rest of your trip until it's time to leave. (Can't leave early because tickets are pre-purchased). (Just an example, Pony used to fly Southwest from Pittsburgh to Cali, but this past year, they switched to American to save themselves a total of $400 dollars. Well that left us paying for our bags and bat bags - which cost the team about $1,600 in baggage fees). Not a small amount for a non-profit organization.

They do not provide any type of coverage as far as online scores (game updates) for parents back home to track like American Legion, Little League, etc. (We were lucky enough to have WB Reporter with us for our parents).

So, I'm just exploring other options for our boys (cost effective) and all involved. If we can find something better, similar competition, then we may try something new.

Billy
