Lynnhaven won 9-8 in 8 innings. It was a hard fought game against a very good Dave Sugar team from Youngstown, OH. DS took the lead in the top of the 1st with 2 unearned runs. Lynnhaven grabbed the lead in the bottom of the 2nd when Jeremy Sandifer’s triple brought home 3 runs (Tyler Pitt, Greg Tomchick and Jeffrey Younkins), all of whom had been walked. Lynnhaven added to the lead in the bottom of the 3rd when Greg Tomchick’s deep double with 2 outs brought home Ryan Cook, who had reached on a single, and Tyler Pitt, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. Dave Sugar responded with a 2-out 2-run homerun in the top of the 4th to narrow their deficit to 5-4. Dave Sugar tied the game 5-5 in the top of the 5th, scoring after Lynnhaven had gotten the first two batters out 1-2. Once again, in the bottom of the 5th, Greg Tomchick hit a deep double with 2 outs bringing home Ryan Cook and Tyler Pitt to break the tie and put Lynnhaven up 7-5. Again, Dave Sugar responded. In the top of the 7th, Dave Sugar batter hit a 2-run home run with no outs to tie the game. Later in the 7th, a Dave Sugar runner scored the go-ahead run on a failed suicide squeeze (batter missed the ball). Going in to the bottom of the 7th, Lynnhaven was down 8-7. Nick Thompson led off with a walk, was sac bunted to second by Ryan Cook and singled home by Adam Posey to tie the game but Lynnhaven could not get Posey in. Into extra innings. Dave Sugar’s first two batters reached in the 8th. When the third batter bunted down third, Ryan VanAssche (the pitcher at that point) threw the ball to third for the first out. He then struck out the next batter and induced a ground out to end the top half of the 8th inning. In the bottom of the 8th, Cam Begley, the first batter of the inning, was hit by the pitch on a 2-2 count, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a ground out. With 2 outs, Steven Butt hit a walk off single to score Begley.

Lynnhaven 5, Taiwan 4. It was another nail biter for Lynnhaven fans with Lynnhaven’s first lead of the game not coming until the final out of the game. Taiwan jumped ahead with their first two batters of the game scoring. Lynnhaven scored 1 in the bottom of the 1st when Ryan Cook singled in Butt who had walked and advanced to second on Terrell Joyce’s single. Taiwan added 2 more in the 3rd with 3 singles, a sac and a fielder’s choice. In the bottom of the 3rd, and with 2 outs, Lynnhaven narrowed the gap with a single run; Joyce singled to right and scored on Cook’s triple to right center. The score remained 4-2 until the bottom of the 5th when Joyce hit a booming solo home run to left field to make the score 4-3. Lynnhaven tied the game in the bottom of the 6th. Adam Posey led off with a double to left center and scored on Greg Tomchick’s single up the middle. In the bottom of the 7th, Butt walked on a full count, advanced to 2nd on Nick Thompson’s single down the 3rd base line, advanced to 3rd on Joyce’s fly out to right center field and scored on Posey’s sac fly to left field. Rian Ellis pitched the complete game to earn the win, allowing only 1 base runner after the 3rd inning.

Tomorrow night, 7 p.m. PDT, Lynnhaven will face the winner of the West Zone, a California team which defeated Puerto Rico today, 13-3, in a run-rule shortened game.

I always thought local sports coverage helps sell the newspapers.

One would think...but the Pilot seems to favor covering the local AAA team in spite of the fact they haven't had a winning season since they hooked up with Balmer.

I would rather read about the legion kids and Billy's guys than the baby birds.
A link to the Palomino World Series bracket is below. As can be seen, there are 8 teams divided into 2 double elimination brackets with the winners of each bracket playing a single championship game. CM Stars are the Central Michigan Stars, Brownsville El Toro are from Texas, the Legends are a California team and the Tijuana team is from Mexico.

Lynnhaven 3, Los Gatos Legends 2.

For the third game in a row, the opponent’s first batter of the game scored. On Friday night, Los Gatos Legends, the West Zone winner from California, scored 2 runs in the first inning. Fortunately for Lynnhaven, they were the only runs of the game for the Legends. Lynnhaven had trouble getting on the board, not advancing any runner beyond 2nd until the 5th inning. In the top of the 5th, David Berman led off for Lynnhaven with a high chopping single to third base. Berman advanced to second on Cam Begley’s sacrifice bunt. Stephen Butt walked and both Begley and Butt advanced a base on Nick Thompson’s 4-3 groundout. Terrell Joyce singled home Berman for Lynnhaven’s first run of the game. Ryan Cook popped up behind first base and with the second baseman and right fielder miscommunicating, Cook reached first and Butt scored the tying run. Adam Posey then ripped a line drive into right field to bring home Joyce for the go-ahead run.

The Legends were not through battling, though. In the bottom of the 5th, with 2 outs, their lead-off batter walked for his third time in as many plate appearances. That walk was followed by a single. The runner at first strayed too far, though, and Tyler Pitt fired the ball to Begley for the 2-3 putout to end the Legends’ threat. In the 6th inning, the Legends’ 3rd out occurred when the potential tying run was caught stealing second on a 2-6 putout. In the bottom of the 7th, Ryan VanAssche, who pitched the complete game for Lynnhaven, was smelling victory. VanAssche struck out the first 2 batters looking, each on three straight pitches, walked the third batter on a full count and struck out the 4th batter swinging on a full count for VanAssche’s 10th strikeout of the game.

Lynnhaven is the sole remaining winner in their half of the bracket. At 7 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Lynnhaven will face the winner of China and the Legends who will meet in a loser’s bracket elimination game at 1 p.m. (PDT) today.

Lynnhaven 11, Tainen, Taiwan, China 5. Finally! Lynnhaven plays from a lead the entire game, wins a game by more than 1 run and does not allow the opponents' first batter to score. Lynnhaven advances to the Palomino World Series Championship game at 7 p.m. PDT, Monday night, August 8 where the opponent will be the winner of tomorrow's game, either Central Michigan Stars or Urban Youth Academy.

More game details at a more reasonable time of day.

Report of the Lynnhaven vs China game.

Lynnhaven showed that they can get the job done with 2 outs. With 2 outs in the top of the 1st after Nick Thompson singled and Ryan Cook walked, Greg Tomchick hit a double to deep center field (fence is 400+), bringing home Thompson and Cook. David Berman followed with a single and Tyler Pitt doubled in both Tomchick and Berman to put Lynnhaven up 4-0. China made a pitching change after Pitt’s AB, bringing in their ace who had pitched a complete game (115+ pitches) against Lynnhaven just 2 days earlier. He held Lynnhaven scoreless in the top of the 2nd although he did yield a single to Thompson and a walk to Cook. China fought back in the bottom of 2nd, aided by a couple of Lynnhaven errors, 2 doubles and a single, scoring 3 unearned runs to tighten the game to 4-3. Once again, in the top of the 3rd, Lynnhaven staged a 2-out rally. Tomchick reached on a single, Berman on an error and Jeff Younkins on a HBP to load the bases. With 2 outs, Stephen Butt hits a double to right center plating all three base runners and increasing the lead to 7-4.

China did not quit. In the bottom of the 3rd, they narrowed the lead after their second batter was walked, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a single. China added another run in the bottom of the 5th when their lead-off batter of the inning hit a towering home run over the left field fence. (It may still be going.) After their 3rd batter of the 5th inning hit a double with one out, Cook took the mound, relieving Cameron Begley who had done a great job, giving up only 2 earned runs. Cook retired the next two batters to end the 5th inning but the score was getting too close, Lynnhaven 7, China 5.

Finally, in the top of the 6th and for the first time in 5 games, Lynnhaven batted around. Tomchick reached second on a right fielder’s error and scored when Berman followed with single up the middle. Pitt reached on a HBP, Jeffrey Younkins reached on a bunt single and Dylan Bratton’s single chopping between short and 3rd brought home Berman and Pitt. Thompson later singled and Cook brought home Bratton with a sac fly to center field. At the end of top of 6, Lynnhaven had some cushion with the score 11-5. Neither Lynnhaven nor China made any noise in the bottom of the 6th or the top of the 7th, respectively.

Again, though, China never appeared to quit, being noisy throughout the game. In the bottom of the 7th, China led off with a hard grounder up the middle, followed by a walk and a single up the middle to load the bases with no outs. Then it ended in 3 throws. With an 0-2 count on the 4th batter of the inning, Pitt picked off the runner at first. On the next pitch, the batter struck out looking, and the next batter grounded out to the second baseman to end the game.

Very Cool

I have not heard of any sports channels carrying the game. I do text play by play for a number of the parents and would be happy to include you in the text group if you send a text number to me by PM. Remember, the game will be at 7 p.m. Pacific time. The opponent will be Central Michigan Stars who defeated the host Urban Youth Academy in a 7-6 ball game yesterday.
Central Michigan Stars 12, Lynnhaven 9. Lynnhaven is the 2011 Palomino World Series Runner-Up. Lynnhaven went to the plate 5 more times than their opponent (39 to their 34), walked 1 fewer time than Central Michigan (3 to their 4), had one less hit (11 to their 12) and ended up with 3 less runs. Lynnhaven got on the board with one run in the top of the first, Central Michigan responded with 3 in the bottom of the first. Lynnhaven scored 3 in the top of the 2nd and held Central Michigan scoreless in the 2nd for Lynnhaven’s only lead at the end of an inning. Rian Ellis added to the lead in the top of the 3rd with a 3-run home run. However, Central Michigan had a break-out inning in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring 6 runs to establish a lead which they held to the end.
