Mariano Rivera signs incentives-based contract with Red Sox

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera inked a lucrative, incentives-based contract with the Boston Red Sox today, a deal that could net him more than $2 million this year alone if he continues to let the Red Sox hit the **** out of him whenever he attempts to finish off a game.
“This is strictly business,” said Rivera. “It’s nothing against the Yankees or an indication that I will purposely try to let the Red Sox get hits off of me. All it is is a sort of back-up plan. I’d rather get them out and get some wins for the Yankees, but if I don’t, then hey – at least I’ve made some more money for my family.”
Boston general manager Theo Epstein said the deal is an example that Red Sox organization will gladly reward players for exceptional performance.
“We want players to know that we are grateful to them for helping us win and get to where we are,” said Epstein. “No one has been more responsible for that in the last year than Mariano Rivera, and this is a way for us to show him our appreciation.”
