I'm not going to question what you're saying about your situation with the Marshall Coaches, but as a parent of a Marshall player,(just finished his freshman year)who was recruited, got a very nice offer & signed his NLI during the early signing period (Nov.'03), I guess what you're eluding to is a bit disturbing to me.
You said "Marshall did a real number on my son, making him a great offer and writing him weekly, then 2 days before he was to fly there to sign a NLI, they changed the offer." Then you wrote in the next post.. "The problem was with the honesty of the recruiter and the timing of everything."
I don't know the coaches all that well...but I do know from our experiences with them and that of my older son (also a DI player),recruiting is a business all of its own....not to be understood by anyone! If you feel that what the coach did or didn't do was not honest, then maybe it should have been discussed with the AD or the NCAA....I just don't feel that questioning the honesty of the coach this on forum is really fair....we don't know his side. I don't want people to assume from your comment that the coaches at Marshall are not honest people. And knowing human nature...people will think just that.
As for my son's situation...The Coach that was the main recruiter and another assistant called and emailed consistantly from July 1, until we had an official visit at the end of Oct. The Coaches were upfront and honest. Timing was everything. My son was not the only player they were recruiting for the position (the other young man was not from IL)...but when it boiled down to it they chose my son over another player that they had already extended an offer. They point blank told us that they were going to withdraw their offer to the other recruit; something that they hated to do and weren't accustom to doing. They felt that our son was a better fit for their future program. They said they would give him a week or so to think about it. They also indicated that the offer to the other recruit would be taken back regardless. They needed a different caliber player. Things for them were changing and still are.
Many circumstances factored into the timing of things....the fact that it took them, due to weather, travel etc., much longer to get out to actually see my son on the field (they had only seen him at showcases) and to arrange an official visit. Also, part of the issue Marshall was facing was the possible move to C-USA. They knew that the other player was an adequate fit it they were to remain in the MAC....but with the move to C-USA anounced at the end of Oct.'03 they knew that they needed to recruit players that they felt could make that move to C-USA. I'm not saying that it's right, but I think the entire picture has to be examined.
Marshall has had a very hard time recruiting players largely due to their "lack" of a decent facility. It's a very sore subject with the coaches, the players and the parents.....BUT with the move to C-USA Marshall will have to do something about it in the next year or so. The program will probably struggle, but they will be playing a very ambitious & tough schedule. I'll say this....my son loves his teammates and says they're all like brothers. He loves the school and feels the people of Huntington and the students, teachers and staff some of the nicest folks he's ever met. He knows that if he couldn't play baseball anymore that he could get his degree and would be happy being at Marshall. His major complaint would be the field situation and the fact that the baseball program is the orphan child (or so it seems) of the Athletic Dept. Is he totally happy with the Coaches and the baseball program??? I think not, but he's my perfectionist and idealist. I don't know that he'd be 100% satisfied with any program. He's extremely intense. But he knows that he's deaing with and feels he can contribute in a positive way. His biggest regret was hearing that the coach that he was really hoping to work with left before he had the chance to work with him.....things change. He's going back for another year to be able to play in C-USA, and he knows that if you're at the bottom, there's only one place you can go.
Sorry for running on so...I'm not trying to be critical of, or defend anyone....just trying to shed some light on the other side. I'm glad that things went well for your son. I like to believe that things always tend to work out for the best.
