Matoaca beat Cosby 5-2 in a non-district matchup that rates as a major upset on Wednesday.

Cosby led 2-0 going into the sixth but gave up 2 in that inning and 3 more in the 7th. Interestingly, Cosby did not use its top pitcher in this game, even as Matoaca took the lead.

Still, you have to give Matt Richardson of Matoaca credit for keeping Cosby's very strong offense in check with a complete game effort. Normally you would expect Cosby to win any game where they hold their opponent to 5 or fewer runs.

I also noticed that Matt Gwaltney is back in the lineup for Matoaca after being out on rehab following TJ surgery last year. Does anyone know if he will be pitching this season?

I am sure Cosby will bounce back. Coach Lowrey bounced them already.
My son has played with about half the team over the years. A lot of Midlothian Wildcats are on that team(soph.age)that won some state titles and finished 5th at the AAU Nationals one year. A very good group of young men that may need some time to gel. and gain confidence.

It would be interesting to know why Cosby pitched Shaban aginst Meadowbrook instead of Matoaca
Different coaches would handle it differently. Some would want to win each game. Others would see a non-district matchup as a chance to see how much intestinal fortitude your younger arms have.

In this case, the word I got was that they wanted to relieve with Shaban, but he had some (apparently minor and temporary) arm soreness that day.

The real story is anyone who can hold Cosby to 2 runs. That won't happen often this year, I assure you.
