$13 million a year? Of course, he's overpaid.

He's not performing neurosurgery or finding a cure for cancer.

He's not teaching your children, or walking a beat to protect you. He's not ducking bullets in Iraq, or running into a burning house to rescue an 80 yr. old that fell asleep while smoking. He's not picking up the garbage you've got piled up in the trash can.

I like sports as much as the next guy, but when is it enough?

I don't know how A-Rod makes ends meet on $25 million a year. Eek
Ad nauseum on the wining about MLB salaries.

Ask the ghost of Joe Jackson if he thinks these guys are overpaid!

Tom Cruise is overpaid.
Hip Hop singers are over paid.
Letterman is overpaid.

MLB owners burned the players for about 100 years. Had they been even a little fair, the Black Sox, Curt Flood and Andy Messerschmidt cases would never have happened.

Now, we the fan pay for the owner's largesse.

I am saying that by today's salary standard's Matsui is not overpaid...especially in NY.

In the case of Matsui I agree with you...and any other player the likes of Matsui.

In some other cases if the player doesn't deliver, measure up, or is totally disruptive to the team then the large salary may not be appropriate. Still, its a concern of management and they are the decisionmakers. They cut the checks.
Clutch players don't go 4 for 20 with 1 RBI in the post season. Lotta do rey me for a guy who took the post season off last year. He's a good journeyman getting paid like an MVP candidate.

Baseball-reference.com puts him in the same group with:

Similar Batters through Age 31

Kevin Millar (947)
Raul Ibanez (938)
Smead Jolley (935)
Geronimo Berroa (933)
Brian Jordan (928)
Charlie Maxwell (925)
Beau Bell (923)
Dick Wakefield (922)
Moose Solters (922)
Jerry Lynch (919)

Nice players all but they didn't get top $$ in their time. I guess everything costs double in NY, including ballplayers.

Dad04,

You name dropper. Smile

Interesting list of names of "underpaid" guys. It would be interesting to find a group of players at that position, in the same age group, that in the the last 5 years played put up similiar numbers, and what they are being paid. I think the Yankees should be using Beenthere's beancounters to get a better bang for their buck
Here are top 12 AL OF's by batting average. Granted, more goes into rating players but I could only search by one criteria, and there is a story behind each player and their stats and salary.

1. J Borchard CWS .417 Salary NA
2. A Sanchez TB .346 $316,000
3. J Tyner MIN .321 Salary NA
4. V Guerrero LAA .317 $12,500,000
5. J Damon BOS .316 $8,250,000
6. R White DET .313 $3,250,000
7. R Nivar BAL .308 $300,000 (2004)
8. H Matsui NYY .305 $8,000,000
9. I Suzuki .303 $12,500,000
10. M Ordonez DET .302 $7,200,000 down from $14,000,000 in 2004 with CWS
11. F Catalanotto TOR .301 $2,700,000
12. C Crawford TB OF .301 $370,000

I should have searched by AB's. Borchard and Navar were paert time.

Mr. H. Matsui represented the National High School Team of Japan in 1991 and 1992 in the Goodwill Series with our American Team [Nomar, Jason Kendall, Goeff Jenkins] and the Korean National Team with Chan Ho Park.
40 million in Japan view our games.

The pro scouts who coached our American Team recognized Matsui's talent at his age of 17.
Because of the agreement with the Japanese pro teams Matsui played with the Tokyo Giants for 5 years until his contract was sold to the Yankees.

Each Yankee home game is TV into Japan.
When the Yankees traveled to Japan two years ago, each game was "sold out" with 50,000 people at $100.00 per ticket. The Yankees share in this revenue.

Matsui is a "profit center" for the NY Yankees. The same is true with Ichiro and the Seattle Mariners. The players are a unique corporation in a corporation.
