I hope I am not building him up to let everyone down, but if you like watching upper 90's pitching, tune in today on TBS at about 5:07 EST and watch the Rays versus Rangers. Joe Maddon is known for the unconventional and he is starting a 22 year old with 9 innings of MLB experience.

Personally, I couldn’t care less if its upper 90’s or upper 80’s pitching. All I want to see is the pitcher throw a good game and give his team a chance to win the game. My guess is, the best “pitching” of the day will be in the Detroit/New York game.
I watched that game as well, Matt Moore has electrifying stuff. He's going up against CJ Wilson, another lefty with a great arsenal that can bring it in the mid 90's. It should be a great game.

The Verlander and Sabathia matchup will be a fun pitching classic to watch...we just need to remember, they're not facing eachother head to head...they're facing the offensive lineups, and the Yankees are tad more potent IMHO.
My husband kind of started following him when he was with the Montgomery Biscuits and my son had the opportunity to watch him at Durham this summer. I mentioned this a week ago, but David Price said he throws the easiest 98 he has ever seen. Stats, I hope you changed your mind. You might be impressed. I've been biting my tongue from a previous post, but he was an 8th round draft pick out of HS, chosen in the same draft with David Price. That's called great scouting and development.

Okay CD, did you get some insider Rays secret code known only to MVP type players parents in the Rays organization?
Moore looks like he has been lights out. I mean really lights out.
While it is true the Rangers don't have any book on him and have not seen him before, Moore still needs to get them out. Two hits over 7 with 6 K's and 98 pitches...I'd say he earned the MLB minimum today and made CD look really, really good(again) on the HSBBW!
I know stats is working the site pretty good for "stats" related scouting. I went back to a thread I started in 2004 about stats and projection. bbscout posted in it about Pedroia some 6 months before the draft. He included a little about tools and some about heart, drive and what I would call grit. 2 1/2 years later bbscout posted when Pedroia ran onto the field at Fenway.
Sounds like Moore has plenty of tools and stats but may also have the heart and drive which stats just never measure?
Very nice call on Moore, CD, very nice.

Yup, igball got the scoop on him first. I agree with CD, great move on their part to bring up a rookie no one has seen.

Either way, what a great day for this young man.

4-5 years for a HS player is just about right for his debut. Just another example of how well the Rays bring up their players.
When Matt was much younger he didn't have that velo, or command, or the presence that might set him apart from others his age. He sure has it now. Matt's always been a great kid from a great family, and he'll always have that. But tonight he got an opportunity to show what he's all about on one of baseball's biggest stages, and he showed better than anyone could have expected. I am so happy for the Moore family tonight. To arrive on the scene like Matt did was absolutely awesome.

Amazing how small the baseball world really is. The summer before last, my son was teammates with Matt Moore in Port Charlotte Florida, so sorry igball, I beat you to the punch by one year Big Grin

Seriously, it sounds like spizzlepop has known the kid for much of his life in New Mexico so he has us both beat by a mile. On the same small world theme, a few years back in Hawaii, my son faced spizzlepop's son on a baseball field at Univeristy of Hawaii. This has to be more than coincidence

infielddad - thanks for the kudos... I was praying that I did not jinx the kid.... He throws effortlessly in the mid 90's and above with no drop-off in velocity late in the game. Nice change-up as well. It looked to me like the Rangers adjusted and were trying to take him oppo late in the game but that still did not work.

Spizzlepop and Cleveland Dad,

We have been following him most of this minor league season. I'm a personal interest type person, so it'a nice to learn a little more about him. Son got to see him in minors, and came home sold. Husband and son were thrilled when he got called up. He just seems so unassuming, poised, and relaxed. I know it's early and he has the benefit of sueprise, but his demeanor sure seems to be made for this sport. I'm very happy for him and his family, and we wish him all of the best.

Maddon said before the Game this would be the only game in the series that Moore would see action. I wonder after the performance last night if that will still be the case.

Anyone hear anything different since Maddon made that comment?

Did he mean the entire series or just this weekend? I don't see him coming back to start if the series goes 5 games. As I understand they don't beleive in pushing young arms, and I beleve he did his job, time for someone else to do theirs as well. Keep in mind they did what they did because their 3 top guys had already pitched this week.

In other words with all that pitching talent, I would be surprised.
