Not that many folks would care, but I finally found the reason for an error in the MaxPreps computations. They, and I suppose many other such services, compute PAs. Here’s the formula they use. PA = AB + BB + HBP + SacF + SacB.

That formula is correct for many things, but it doesn’t work for some computations. The reason is, it doesn’t take into account a batter being awarded 1st because of a defensive issue like catcher’s interference.

I found it when I tried to reconcile my numbers with theirs. I couldn’t understand it because I do my numbers 1st, then put in the MaxPreps numbers, so theoretically they should exactly the same, but they weren’t. At any rate, I notified them this morning and they’ll likely fix it this summer by adding a column where those defensive issues can be input.

Which is absolutely correct. Per 10.21 (f):

On-base percentage, divide the sum of hits, bases on balls and times hit by pitch by

the sum of at-bats, bases on balls, times hit by pitch and sacrifice flies.

No credit for reaching base on FC or ROE, which are not a product of positive offensive performance.
