I'll try and be objective. Of course he'll be fine. His best will be as a starter and not in the bullpen. If this doesn't look like stockpiling for the future than there's something I missed. Close to trading Garland and now launching McCarthy. KW is looking to turn over his entire rotation within the next 1-2 years. If he's having a fire sale send a few arms up to Clark and Addison.
KW is getting ready for life without Buerhle. They need a lefty starter and Danks is the #1 prospect in the Texas organization, something that BMac could never lay claim to. I like the move because Masset (BA#8 Ranger prospect) seems to be another power arm for what is shaping up to be a nice pen. BMac was a fan and media favorite because of his games against the Rangers and BoSox but has really accomplished little to date. I'm certainly glad that they traded BMac for these guys instead of Garland.
Man, they still won 90 games last year and they really weren't firing on all cylinders. I think the bullpen was more of an issue than the starters were - at least when it mattered most. Do they really think this Floyd (from Phil) guy is going to do better than McCarthy? If I was Lance Broadway, I would start doing some extra work real soon. Sounds like we will be back to where we were 2 years ago, a group of guys in the 5 spot with a combined 7.00 ERA.
I dunno about this one either. McCarthy had the best training camp of any pitcher in 05. I thought he was the logical move into Garcia's spot and actually looked forward to him being there. I guess Charlie Hager is the guy they were looking to. I'm baffled, I just don't see the equity coming back our way.
Even the Brewers realize what it takes to sign and keep pitchers that they recognize as upgrades to their team. If they're willing to give a 4 year deal and $42 Million to Jeff Supan, I believe that the White Sox see this and are horrified. We know that the Chairman doesn't like long term deals, especially for pitchers, and that's why, IMO, they are stockpiling an inventory of young arms (inexpensive arms) in the hopes that a couple of them will pan out. But, why McCarthy? He's young, experienced beyond his years, doesn't make big money and won't be a free agent for some time. IMO, nothing bigger than Kenny Williams' ego.
bballdad,

Fair enough question. As I've said before, I was a Danny Evans fan while he did his tutelege with the Sox right along with KW. When Scheuler left, Reinsdorf bypassed Evans (assistant GM) in favor of Williams. I just don't care for his style and the way he presents himself. He reminds me too much of Tony LaRussa, someone who believes that he's smarter than his counterparts. Just my opinion, not a a personal cheap shot.

Been, Danks hasn't distinguised himself in the minors since he was drafted. Saying that he would have been on the Ranger's staff next season doesn't mean much. Are you comparing the Texas staff to the White Sox staff?

The final death knell for the White Sox keeping Buerhle or any of their pitchers getting even close to free agency was sealed today with the signing of Barry Zito to a $126 Million, 7 yr deal with the Giants. Man, all those pitchers that signed deals last year, ala Jon Garland, must be kicking themselves about now.

Carlos Zambrano could become a $20 Million per year player by next winter. Jim Hendry, I hope your watching.

nc42dad,

I believe you're right. How about this for a theory? Maybe the Cards let Suppan and Marquis leave without any attempt (apparently) to re-sign them because they suspect just what you are saying. I know, Marquis was terrible, but Suppan deserved a reasonable offer after his years of injury free performance and an outstanding World Series. They may already have spoken with KW about Buerhle and it may be just a matter of time. Good call.

It's almost like a poker game, isn't it? I liked what I saw of Suppan in the playoffs, but did not really see him early in the season either. I've been reading stuff on this Danks, and potentially he looks like he could be starting material, someday anyway. St.Louis appears kind of thin on pitching in the high minors, so I would imagine they will have to go out of their organization (Buerhle again). Home town discount included?
I agree again. However, even if Buerhle gives the Cards a small hometown discount, at today's new salary levels it will be far more money and for more years than he'd ever see with the White Sox.

All it takes is one major signing of a pitcher like Zito to a 7 year deal and things will be drastically different for the near term. Now, GM's will be giving pitchers 5 year deals while telling their fans, and owners, that they held the line by not giving 6 or 7 years. A 3 year deal for a pitcher will be just the norm for a guy who's still breathing. It is what it is, but I never thought that it would have been the SF Giants that raised the bar so high.
