There are a few baseball books on my desk at work. It's Friday afternoon and I picked up "Montana Summer" by Tom Yankus. A friend played under Yankus. I enjoyed Yankus recollection of his first conversation with Jack McKeon (manager) when the former arrived in Missoula to play for the Timberjacks in 1956.
"Skip. Just call me Skip, that's all. Sit down and let me fill you in on some things. First off, forget all that **** you learned at that college you went to [Williams]. You know how many players we sign out of colleges like yours? None. We don't even scout those donut boxes. Too many bright-*** guys who think they know how to play this game. ****, we don't do nothin' fancy out here. You throw strikes, bust a few guys in the ****, and you'll be fine. And don't think, ya' got that? Just reach back and fog that ball. I know you can throw."
Not only the greatest game, but the the greatest people.
