Great job by JJ. Looked a lil overwhelmed and nervous in warmups, but settled down to battle the entire game. Held Heathcott hitless( LSU signee). A feat in itself and I believe a tone setter.

Gutsy performance by North SS AJ Florence who took a groundball in the 5th to the mouth that knocked out his 2 front teeth. He didn't even miss an at bat. Dad( Danny Flo of Frozen Ropes) rushed him to emergency room, they shoved teeth back into place, and AJ returned to the game in the 6th. I believe he had emergency oral surgery following the game back in McKinney. That's just an example of how this team plays. No stars, just a bunch of guys that have gelled when it counts. Nothing seems to phase. Good luck Saturday Bulldogs!!!!
McKinney North one step from state baseball tournament after 2-1 win

From Staff Reports - Dallas Morning News

TEXARKANA, Texas – Submarines and small ball.

It's a formula that's put McKinney North within one victory of the Class 4A state baseball tournament.

Submariner Justin Scharf continued his postseason mastery Thursday, stopping Texarkana Texas High, 2-1, in the opener of the best-of-3 4A Region II final series.

Scharf (9-4) struck out six and induced 10 ground-ball outs, getting flawless defense from his teammates. He gave up six hits.

"Justin's pitched a lot of big games for us this year," said McKinney North coach Jim Gatewood. "He did another good job tonight against a great ballclub. He's been in the situation before and come through for us."

Scharf walked four and lost his shutout to an opposite-field home run by Nate Sorenson leading off the seventh inning. Scharf bested Texas High ace and Baylor signee Josh Turley, who struck out eight and walked four.

A. J. Florence, who lost a tooth when a bad-hop grounder struck him in the mouth in the fourth inning, singled in the first McKinney North run in the third .

Bunts played key roles in the decisive fourth inning. Ryan Sclemmer, who had walked and reached second on an error, was sacrificed to third. He scored on Ryan Parker's suicide squeeze to the right side of the infield.

"Small ball is our game," Gatewood said. "We have to play that way against a team like Texas High. They're good, and we've still got our work cut out for us."

The series resumes at 1 p.m. Saturday in McKinney.
