I'm starting to look at schools with my HS junior son and among his possible 'fit' schools for academics/interests is Menlo. However, I can't for the life of me figure out if they are DIII or NAIA . They seem to be both. "Menlo competes in the NCAA Division III and NAIA California Pacific Conference". It looks like most if not all their baseball opponents are DIII, but there may be an NAIA institution or two in there (Westmont?). I would guess they do NOT offer athletic scholarships since they seem to play a DIII schedule, but I can't figure it out as I am not extremely bright Wink. Anyone 'in the know' on this school? ILUVBB? infielddad? CADad?

Menlo has gone through a real evolution the past 15-years. It used to be known as the "back door to Stanford" when they had a 2-year program (it ended in the late 80's). They have historically been a 4-year business school. In the early 90's they added a school of Communications. However; it talking with the new president, they are trying to re-establish the school as "Silicon Valley's business school."

Menlo "divorced" the high school and middle school program within the last 5-years. The campus has been split and the college is doing what it can to re-establish its identity.

As to baseball; the reality is Menlo is really the only D3 program in northern California. When CSUEB became D2 it left Menlo as the only D3 program in the area. The last few years most of their games are either against northwest or southern california D3 schools. They also fill in against several D1, D2 or NAIA programs.

I have known several players over the past few years that have played at Menlo. I have not heard a bad thing; however, they have a new slate of coaches this year (the head coach came last year).

The school is expensive and has a limited endowment. While I don't know, I suspect that there are limited resources to apply to scholarships of any kind.

The baseball field is OK; the HS field which is adjacent is much nicer.

If you need more detailed information send me a PM.
Krakatoa,
I live about a stones throw from Menlo College(well, a small stone and when I had a better arm.)
Just a few observations about baseball:
1.) the field does not have lights
2.) They travel considerably since they are the only DIII in Northern CA.
3.) Because of travel distances, games that are rained out are often called quite early before they or the opposition travel. This results in very few make ups and a schedule often times of 25-30 games, not 40. The field does not drain well for sure
4.) They don't have a conference affiliation so no post season tournament. To an extent, they are competitive but not at the level with better West Region DIII's. Since they are close, I do watch portions of games when CLU, Chapman and a few others come North. .
5.) if they have a Fall schedule it is quite limited because the baseball field is used for Football practice and they cannot access the field after without lights except in very limited ways.
6.) The new head coach(2nd year as ILVBB noted) came from Santa Clara where he was the baseball operations manager for about 3-4 years.
The school:
Very small.
Around 600-800 students.
Campus is pretty but not like the SCAC by comparison.
The high school, Menlo School shares part of the grounds and, on a comparative basis, the college buildings are showing their age.
The school itself does seem to be making some rebound from reports of a precarious financial situation a few years back.
It's local reputation derives mostly from its business program.
