My son has always been a very, very good hitter and went into a huge slump. Pop ups to 1st, week ground balls, etc. Every one was telling him he had a “mental” problem. He is pushing, too aggressive, not aggressive enough, etc.

He has done tee-work and cages to the point his hands were bleeding. He constantly told me his swing didn’t feel right but I was buying in on the theory of mental problems others have told me so I just kept working with him and trying to boost his ego.

From the perception of “mental” problems my son has inherited my wife’s attribute of she shows her emotion on her face. What others don’t realize is they both shake it off,,,,,,,,,,,I’m going to get both of them acting lessons! Funny aside: My son was about 11 or so and pitching and having a rare day where he just couldn’t throw a strike. At one point the coach screams at him throw a strike and my son looks at him with a look of what do you think I’m trying to do – yes I corrected this behavior but it is still one of the many funny stories we talk about at the dinner table.

Anyway, I finally brought him to his hitting instructor who he hasn’t seen in about three years who immediately saw what he was doing wrong. I might not describe this right but his stance and hip turn were perfect but his front shoulder was way in front of his hands. He told us this is a common problem for hitters and was compounded by my son being a bit to coiled and wrapping his bat. As you all can probably tell I’m not an expert but I do know my son. He told my son just to practice the front hand one arm swing as a first step in warm ups ….. keep it simple at first.

I asked my son about 75% though the lesson if he wanted to come back…..his answer was absolutely YES. He finally found someone who understood. I should mention my son knows hitting techniques and is a student of the game. Any other times he struggled I just worked with him until he figured out what he was doing wrong.

I write this for two purposes – I want you to pray that he gets a hit or 2 tomorrow (LOL) and to offer my advice to others if things don’t seem right ------- find a pro. There may be some high schools that have time for individual hitting instruction but I think they are probably in the minority – get a pro if you need to……..yes, the budget hurts big time but somehow we seem to make it.

I know it will take time to re-train muscle memory but hopefully I have good news after the next couple of weeks but either way you should have seen him nailing line drives again and his confidence level soar.

PS: Based on another post, I had my sons eyes checked and turns out he was wearing the wrong strength of contacts as well
To our military men, women and families - You are all awesome - that flag is yours and I thank you for the opportunity for giving me the honor of removing my cap prior to every baseball game I see.

What did his coach say? You never mentioned bringing him in for advice. If he is as good as you say the coach would find time to work with him individually.

I am glad that it worked out for your son but remember just because it is expensive doesn't mean it is the best. One problem is people listen to too many people. There is no ONE way to hit but if you try to mix or listen to everyone then nothing gets accomplished.
Coach, his high school coach is a fantastic guy who is pulled in every direction that you can think of. He did work with my son and I think if we had stayed with it he would have found the problem as well.....but everyone was thinking mental. The pro took a fresh look and was able to see the problem without any preconceived thoughts. That was the point of my post.

My son really likes and respects his coach and so do I. We also told the coach what we were doing and gave him feedback on what transpired. The coach was extremely positive. I didn't think about this until tonight but I will be thanking the coach because he stuck with my son even when most coaches probably wouldn't have

PS: He went 1 for 2 tonight and his confidence level has just soared. All for the price equivalent to bringing my family out to dinner.

Things are looking good, he has gone 1 for 2, 1 for 2 and 2 for 3. I asked my wife if she thought it was worth the price of dinner --- YES

One of the hits tonight was a 365 (370 Fence)shot that turned the center fielder around a couple of times and he dropped it/hit his glove ---- scorekeeper gave him a hit - sympathy hit if you ask me - I would have scored it an error......

Prior to him seeing the pro - he was batting 167 - his current "streak" is over 560 with multiple RBIs.

I probably need to apologize catcher09 because I immediately thought you were one of those parents who think the coach is not that smart and HAVE to go find an expert to fix the problem. After reading your response I am pretty sure you are not that guy and I apologize.

I am a high school coach who has been affixed with the "not that smart" title based on the fact most of the parents go to the board and principal wanting a coaching change. I have no idea why people are like this and when I talk to other coaches they go through the same thing and the ones that quit say that is why.

Now to justify my not thinking I am not that smart let me say I am probably the most successful coach in the school's history - noboyd is sure because they never kept baseball records until I showed up. In 40 years the school has been open they only have 6 district titles (first round of playoffs and all schools make the playoffs in KY) and I have three of them in 7 years. I have a regional runner up (second round of playoffs and the district champ and runner up move to regional for a total of 8 team tournament)trophy when the school has never been past the second round of region. I got the team ranked as high as 15th and there are no classes in Ky so that was 15th of every team in the state.

Sorry if I am bitter but it just gets to me. I guess the reason is I am not from that area and I am a "foreigner" and don't know anything.
Coach, no need to appologize - anyone with basic math skills can see the coaches are not in this for the money thats for sure - based on the hours you all put in as compared to the meager money you receive you might be making 10 cents an hour or less. If your team ever wants to make a trip down to Georgia we run summer tournaments the whole month of June every year (Thurs - Sat) - It could be fun!
