Congratulations to Phil Humber from the great state of TX for his continued good work in FL STATE LEAGUE pitching for the NY Mets ST LUCIE ADV A Ball affiliate. Outstanding tonight in front of several thousand rip-roaring dedicated Metsie fans!!

He pitched six complete without an earned run scattering a few hits and shows much promise as BIG LEAGUE Pitching Prospect! WOW!!! Glad I was there to see his last two starts which have both been very good. Excellent, in fact!!!!

I promote players that I feel in my gut can play this game and be successful at higher levels and I'm here to attest to the fact that this TX player has overcome a lot of obstacles and is not completely back 100 percent but will be and tonight is a perfect indication of just that! His last start was effective also here in Vero before tonight's start in St Lucie so I felt compelled to give him this recognition. I was there at both starts including tonight.
FBs were cruising 90-94MPH touching 95 several times with very effective true CB in 80MPH range. Pitchability was good and mechanics were very solid! I can tell someone has been working with this prospect because of his proper use of body in delivery and ability to repeat delivery and hit spots in-and-out keeping hitters completely off-balance. I am now following this RHP prospect and believe in him as a scout who looks deeply into makeup of perseverence and determination of a player and how he handles adversity and obstacles. He has shown a great deal of this in his starts I've had the benefit of witnessing, firsthand. This update is worthy and deservedly so to the show he shall go!!!! Peace, Shep

For those that do not rememember Philip, he was on the Rice National Championship team and was drafted by the Mets after his junior year.

He is from my neck of the woods - East Texas - Carthage specifically. I saw him throw in high school several times. What struck me from watching him as a HS player was his accuracy. He could place his fastball anywhere he wanted to at will.

To this day he had the best fastball placement of any HS pitcher I have ever seen while Colt Griffin threw the hardest fastball I have ever seen (100 mph).

Great to hear he is coming back from his injuries.

I appreciate the compliment more than you'll ever know and thank you for the praise...I am humbled....beyond words. peace, Shep

Clayton didn't throw today, I was there as promised. He should pitch in the morning and you can bet after the compliments I have received from my friends via phone and here on this board from the citizens of the "Great State of Texas", I will be right there at 10:00AM, bright-eyed and bushy tailed Smile

I second the motion, Shep is a Class Act.. Always bringing his A game..
I thank you good people for the compliments.

Future NY Mets starter Phil Humber had another outstanding outing last night in Lakeland against the Tigers, a FL STATE LEAGUE affiliate.

In five innings of shutout ball, "Phil the Deal" had 7 Ks with a couple of scattered hits.
A valiant effort indeed despite a no-decision in this noble effort last night.

If Phil continues this comeback and steady success as he has thusfar in this league, look for a promotion to the next step soon! peace, Shep

Pro baseball notebook: Bosqueville’s Andy Jackson gets promoted
By John Werner

After dominating out of the bullpen in rookie ball, Bosqueville’s Andy Jackson got a promotion to Class A Greensboro (N.C.) Thursday.

It’s easy to see why the Florida Marlins were impressed.

In nine Gulf Coast League appearances, Jackson allowed just one earned run in 16 innings for a microscopic 0.56 ERA. The left-hander gave up 12 hits and four walks while striking out 16 for the Jupiter (Fla.) club.

Jackson was a 26th round draft pick in June out of Central Arkansas.

“Rookie level isn’t a whole lot different than pitching in college,” Jackson said. “I just tried to mix up my pitches. My fastball topped out at 92 mph and I also threw the split finger, curve and changeup. Class A ball is probably going to be a whole lot harder.”

Jackson said the pace of minor league baseball is much different than college but he’s already grown used to it.

“You’re always on the run here,” Jackson said. “You go from hotel to hotel and there are a lot of bus rides. I guess I’m used to being away from home because I attended college out of state.”
I've been so busy till I forgot to let you all know that RHP-PHIL HUMBER was promoted up to AA NYM affiliate Binghamton this week. This AA Met's affiliate is Red Hot and walking away with everything in Eastern League. Humber will be a nice addition to this team. Phil could also help starters get rested with a few starts at big league level when roster expands in preparation for post-season play. Smile Peace, Shep's .02

IMHO, I believe Phil Humber should be recognized and receive "Minor League Comeback Player of the Year"! What a story! WOW!! Peace, Shep

Congratulations to Humber. I have to mention again that Philip is from Carthage from right here in the sticks of East Texas.

Shepster I have to assume that he is still like he was in High School - one of the most accurate pitchers I have ever seen. He could spot his fastball anywhere around the plate that he wanted to at will. He was a "pitcher" in every sense of the word and was so good that I had to watch in amazement even though he was making my high school team look stupid.

In all the years that I have played, watched, or watched my now senior in high school son play I have never seen a high school pitcher as good as this guy. Good luck to him in the Bigs.
Well, it's official now. Phil "Humby" Humber has his own locker now in the big league New York Mets clubhouse. There is an interesting read at the NY Mets home page titled, "Humber Settles In". Very Inspirational and apparently Pedro and Willie think he is the Real Deal Phil also Smile !!!

There is someone there in Texas who played a huge role in this promotion happening for this Major Leaguer. That's where I met the person I'm about to mention, scouting Phil in FL STATE LEAGUE earlier this summer. His name is Robert Ellis and he still resides there in TX. Let me give you all the skinny(inside). This man, Mr Ellis, has flown all over the country to watch Phil pitch at Phil's request in order to make suggestions/adjustments in pitching mechanics as well as talk with him about how to pitch hitters and what works at higher levels etc.

Robert Ellis has 16 yrs Major League experience and pitched on the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks World Series team. He knows his baseball and is Director of Operations for a huge sports management group. Mr Ellis follows and stays in constant communication with many of our players. He gives much one-on-one attention to many a prospect working through the minors and they are all getting promoted and having a great deal of success. I highly recommend this instructor and consummate professional to the Great State of Texas. He is at the very top of my list at current time and deserves much credit for his unselfish work in the field and at the parks. peace, Shep
I will attest to Mr. Robert Ellis. He called me this past spring and asked to work with my son Brian. Beginning in June he became Brian's pitching coach. As far as I am concerned he made all the difference in the world with my son. It is much more than mechanics - he teaches the pitchers the mental aspects of how to pitch and how to get batters out.

His main focus is the fastball - how to attack the zone and NOT to mess with the black part of the plate. In other words aggresively attack the batter using proper mechanics and the right mental attitude. It works.

My son had a real good summer and most of the credit in my opinion goes to Robert. He really does know what he is doing and pitchers love him.
I will attest to both Shep and Robert Ellis. I have known them as players, instructors and scouts. These two guys know baseball and spend their time working with college/HS prospects and professional players. <Too many to name>
Phil Humber is just one of many examples of players they've helped through the years. There are many others. Humber is lucky to have them.
If you have an opportunity to have these scouts work with your sons, I highly recommend it. Being a longtime professional baseball person and observer who has read this board for many years incognito, I am amazed at the progress of these instructors and their players. All you have to do is read everything Shep has written at PG's site in professional forum and it is easy to see his love and desire for the game of baseball. He along with Ellis may possibly be the best in the business!
You will not regret taking my advice on these two guys and their expertise! anonymous person
Congrats to Phil from another East Texas family! I would also like to add my kudos regarding Robert Ellis. He became my son's adviser last year and has been a tremendous help to our family regarding the mlb draft. He is building up quite a clientele of college and pro players as an adviser/agent. If you are looking for someone to represent your son as an adviser or agent and/or work with your son as a pitching coach, Robert is the man for you. If you would like any further info please email me (see my personal profile).
ATTN Crawdad:I meant to post this yesterday but thought about you Crawdad and your astute observations and ability to spot talent as you did with Humber long before any of us, way to go Crawdad and yes, his accuracy is pin-point, again!

Hey there OUBsbMom!!! It's a pleasure to finally meet you even if it is in cyberspace-LOL
Spoke with Casey's dad last night, Mr "W".

We are all very proud of your son's accomplishments! He has really come a long way and after climbing into Mr Simpson's top ten players of PG Cross-Checkers final summer rankings in the Alaskan League speaks volumes of his ability and talent! Way to go!!

I have witnessed this magic Coach Ellis works with our players since becoming a part of the ZSMG team, firsthand. Our jobs are much easier with players such as our OUBaseball friday night pitcher Smile Cleveland wanted to sign him. Maybe they'll be back this spring and my hopes are with alot more dough in those money bags!

You people here in TX are the best! All of you will get our absolute best efforts in the promotion and instruction of your sons.

Have a good day board! Headed to the other side of the world to watch Travis Chick for Seattle!

Peace,
Shep
