PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Mets yesterday finally came to terms with their 2005 first-round pick, agreeing to a four-year deal with righthander Mike Pelfrey that could be worth as much as $6.5 million, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The Mets gave Pelfrey a major-league contract, meaning he is placed on the 40-man roster. The deal is guaranteed at about $5.2 million, and he can make $1.3 million more in incentives based on how quickly he makes the major leagues, the person said.

Pelfrey, listed at 6-7 and 215 pounds last year at Wichita State, turns 22 Saturday. He is coming off a stellar junior year, going 12-3 with a 1.93 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 139 2/3 innings. He was ranked as the second-best college pitcher by Baseball America.

Over his three collegiate seasons, the imposing righthander compiled a 33-7 record with a 2.18 ERA and 366 strikeouts in 395 2/3 innings.

The two stud pitchers that we ran across (out there on KS/MO travel teams) were Pelfrey and Joey Devine. While these are observations from only 3/4 games of seeing them at ages 16-18, Pelfrey always appeared very controlled and mature beyond his years. Specifically.... in his junior year he was already able to self-correct mechanics in mid-game.
Devine could bring it, but seemed wound pretty tight, perhaps born for the bullpen.
