My son, now 18 and a senior, has attended Mickey Owen Baseball School every summer for at least four weeks since he was nine years old. The last three summers he was there he worked as a counselor. The exception was this past summer as he attended Premier Baseball in Chandler, Ok. This school was started by former Mickey Owen coaches.
I can't really say enough about the baseball experience at MOBS. My kid wasn't forced to pack his bags and get shipped off there. He went because after his first year he simply fell in love with the program and coaches.
The baseball is o.k - intersquad games are played daily and almost nightly outside teams are brought in. Some of the competition is great. Like any situation, some isn't. Basically, it's 24/7 baseball. No kid is required to actually play, but all are given plenty of playing time. The instruction was pretty good, at least for him. He has always been way ahead of his team mates and competition. A lot of this is his drive - a lot is owed to MOBS.
What MOBS really did for my son was offer him an education in independence and getting along with all kinds of people from every part of the globe. He played with kids from Japan, Korea, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Australia and every corner of the US. He grew up in that school, so to speak.
There are some things that suck about the place - the cabins suck, very old with no a/c, and it si out in the middle of nowhere. You have to kind of find it every time you go there. The food was pretty good - baseball food - if you will. What do you feed a couple of hundred kids?
There are five fields and they are maintained for the most part by the counselors. They are o.k. - not great. I understand they have added a decent weight room recently. I think they have also gotten into the 'travel team' thing as well.
My son chose to attend Premier this summer as stated. After eight years I guess it was time for a change, and he knew what to expect from the guys that started the program. Sure, he has some negative comments about MOBS, but overall, I think his dedication to the program speaks volumes for the school (and the kid.) As far as I am concerned, it is the best baseball money I have ever spent. And I've spent a lot on a lot of programs, including baseball in Australia and Puerto Rico. (Although PR is hard to beat - I had the opportunity to watch him play there for a week.)
I am writing an article for Ozark Preps Illustrated on the history of the Mickey Owen Baseball School. I am interested in interviewing any former alumni of the Mickey Owen Baseball School, and learning more about their experiences. Please respond if you know of anyone you would suggest I interview.
