I assume Mr. Haines is still running the program. They have a very good track record for placing kids in good programs. I know a number of kids that played for the program in 03, 04 and 05 and they had nothing but positive things to say about them. If you would like to PM me I may be able to get you in contact with a few of them.
Allan Haines is a true gentleman who has his players and their proper matches with potential college programs in mind at all times. He has masterfully managed a huge roster while assuring equal opportunities to all of his players -- a very rare happening on a baseball field, but a very necessary part of a showcase team. He desrves my highest endorsement.
scout10.....FYI, most programs list players and their commitments whether they're currently on the roster or not......as long as they've played with the team they've been a part of their program...below is a list of teams that do similar:

Midland Redskins
East Cobb
Dirtbags
Arizona Firebirds
Dallas Tigers
DBATS
Houston Heat

I'm sure there are more but these are off the top of my head.
As a father of a 2008 graduate who played for Allen Haines on the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox this past fall, I couldn’t recommend or endorse a coach and program more. Alan makes it his mission to work day and night for each and every player on his team.

It’s up to the player to determine his own list of options and Allen works with he’s given. In the meantime Allen works relentlessly to help these boys to be seen and known by their schools of interest. The whole time he’s trying to keep expanding each player’s list of options by talking to other schools on their behalf.

I’ve watched him help player after player commit to the school that the player believes is his perfect fit. In addition, I’ve seen him create options for other players that never had an idea of where they wanted to go and couldn’t even provide him anything to work with other than the fact that could play ball and wanted to play ball.

Baseball 12532 – I couldn’t agree more. My son playing for the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox has been a wonderful experience for him and our family.

I think when you do your research and talk to the actual parents you’ll consistently hear these comments about your son playing on the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox.
scout 10 -- I agree that there are many types of exposure opportunities. In fact, the whole recruiting process is laid out very nicely on a new CD product from MVP baseball, authored by Al McCormick.

However, when a player has his fall showcase moments to shine, what better venue to do so than as a member of the Mid Atlantic Red Sox? Over the past decade, during 'crunch time' that is the late summer/fall of senior year for baseball players, what person has had more impact for worthy, college bound baseball players in the East than Mr. Haines?

What started as a venture to bring exposure to the better players in the Frederick, Md area has blossomed into an extraordinarily productive showcase team representing talent from a half-a-dozen states plus DC. The Red Sox are highly selective, having several tryouts each summer including invitees from around the Mid-Atlantic area.

Suffice to say that during a fall showcase game, when you look up in the stands or down the left field line and see him in lengthy conversation with the Coach from your son's first choice college, discussing the young man's baseball future -- there's nobody I'd rather have doing that job than Allen Haines.

Maybe it's different in Virginia...but here in Maryland, good talent has been underserved for years. While it is generally agreed that this year's class of MD baseballers is outstanding, they are being recognized and appreciated through the efforts of people like Haines' w/ Red Sox and Albany's Orioleanders, Wargo (the definitive camp experience -- Southern Maryland for being seen), and McCormick (independent talent evaluation and recommendation services w/MVP). What's great about all four is that they ALL go the extra mile to help kids to realize their dreams. Most people believe that doing more than you promise is a good thing.... all four above have passed the test on that score many times over.

Showcases that mimic PG are nothing more than 'cattle calls'. Unfortunately, the whole PG concept gets even further diluted when so many others have joined in the 'money grab'.

College showcases remain the ultimate fundraiser for the "Spring trip". Save your cash on that one, as well, unless you have been having meaningful dialogue with the coaching staff (email and phone), they have seen you play or seen your CD/videotape and they TELL you that they are interested in signing you.

Perhaps you should look at the bigger baseball schools like UVA, South Carolina etc's websites. It seems that they mention the early signed recruits PG rating. I guess they must look at the Perfect Game Showcases. You think!!!
Yes PG is the "granddaddy of them all", kinda like the Rose Bowl. Good events in 17U WWBA and October in Fla., but the players who rate highly were already high profile and were not necessarily seen by coaches at the showcase or influenced by the "ratings". It's just some fluff to add to the recruiting announcements that make everyone feel good. That's ok, but hardly worth the money for the propaganda.

Point is that many folks are spending needlessly to advance their players via the wrong vehicles (all of the rest of these cattle calls). Generally speaking, save your money and use the local help available to further your son's baseball future.

Look - I don't work for PG but you are misleading everyone on this board. Perfect Game Showcases are the best run and some are well worth it. I am not saying just do Perfect Game showcases. I am not saying do the imitation perfect game showcases. You need to be on a Good Fall showcase team also.

You also have to target the school. What type of school or what school are you looking to go to. Do you want a 1st tear team like South Carolina, Florida State or Chapple Hill or 2nd Tear like East Carolina or 3rd tear team like Hartford, or UNC Greensboro. The team you choose makes a difference.

What I said originally stands. The player has to be good enough.

Also the idea that PG merely promotes players who were already "known" is completely wrong. I know of many players whose first real exposure came from PG events. I know of countless others who tried many venues but got traction only from their PG events.

That erronneous sentiment sounds like one of those sour grapes stories to me -- somebody who didn't get rated/ranked as highly as they would've liked.

Thank you. That is exactly what I was thinking.
Never said PG was bad. In fact, found visits to the 17U WWB to be great tournament play which helped promote a particular player to ACC after nobody knew who he was the previous summer. Very gratifying.

October tournament, likewise, a great experience playing against the top players from around the nation, many with legit pro aspirations.

As for your tier assessment on D1 schools here's the latest RPI--
I think East Carolina would qualify as top tier with a #29 ranking. There's almost 300 D1 baseball schools.
So Carolina #7 UNC Greensboro #124, Hartford #246

Scout 10 -- the original post was request for info about two terrific teams led by coaches who do an outstanding job in working with young baseball players.

You hijacked the thread and took some low brow potshots at some good people (that you have since retracted) --now whose backpeddling?

I have witnessed the PG TOURNAMENT format first hand, and happen to like what PG does with certain tournaments very much. In fact, I'd recommend that Maryland Select go to 17U WWB this summer and that Mid Atlantic Red Sox head to PG October event in Florida next fall. They would both represent well.

The PG showcase prostyle workout, for other than the top 400-450 players in the country, is not so valuable .... If there are some kids who weren't known before and demonstrate that they belong in the top 450, well God bless.

In responding to your hijacking of the thread, if you have a budget and can't do everything, I believe that good summer and fall showcase teams, like the ones inquired about, are an excellent way to go.

Amazing...

...in an attempt to get back to the original question in this thread, I will say that both MidAtlantic Red Sox and Maryland Select have excellenet reputations in terms of college exposure - although the Red Sox have been at it a longer. Both are run by great gentlemen, with fine coaches.

One difference is that I beleive the Red Sox roster changes quite a bit ech year and is larger in number. Select's roster I think is pretty static with a core group and other players rotating in and out. For instance, last year they were a 16U team, year before they were a 15U team, this year they'll be a 17U team. Whereas, I think the Red Sox have played a 19U schedule pretty much all along, each year with players selected on their abilities to compete at that level. Both would be excellent choices for a good athlete from all I know.

I am sure there are players who have played on one or the other who can add more info (unless they don't want to get caught in a crossfire!)
i would like to say that my son has played for both md select and the mid atlantic red sox, and it was a great experience! both programs have great leaders and they both are trying to promote their players and get them into a program that the players are looking for. anyone who is interested in playing for either organization, you should consider yourself very lucky to have your son around these type of people.
My son had the opportunity to play for Allen Haines and his Mid-Atlantic Red Sox this past Fall 2007. My son is a 2009 grad and looks forward to having the same opportunity again next Fall 2008.

It was an exciting experience as a parent to watch this level of baseball in nice stadiums and baseball fields. To me, it is like doing the "Battle of the Ship" every weekend during the Fall season. Great baseball, new baseball friends and exposure to collegiate baseball.

Allen works passionately to help his players.

I couldn't be happier for the opportunity for my son to play for the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox and Allen Haines.
"Lessons Learned"
Everybody is out for your dollar. College coaches do not look at tapes that are submitted unless specifically requested.

1. Participate in a Perfect Game nearby residence to get into their database.

2. If you are a pitcher/catcher you will get priority in being noticed/documented.

3. Play for a summer travel team that has a history of playing/attending showcase tournaments and that provides ample playing time.

4. Narrow your college choices to those that will consider your son based on his academic/baseball abilities.

5. Attend winter spring college camps offered during your son's junior year.

6. The first question college coaches ask a potential recruit is "what is your cumulative grade point average" ----

If is more important how your son performs at the showcases versus how he performs for his high school team.

Again, priority in terms of getting noticed:

1. Left handed pitchers
2. Right handed pitchers
3. Catchers
4. The rest

Oh that is right --- from the brain that made the comment "recruiting is heartless" Hello --- Division 1 Baseball is big business -- college coaches only last if they win and guess what (I bet you can't guess) -- college coaches win because of one reason -- recruitment of TALENT! And one more key observation before you shrug your self to bed --- Perfect Game has been very successful in rating kids that have been rated at the top of the heap. OK -- you get one more tidbit because you have not nodded off yet --- Look at both the Perfect Game and Baseball America ratings by State and you notice a similarity --- wow --- I wonder why?????

Ok -- One more observation -- for those that discount the viability of Perfect Game and Baseball America ratings --- the advocates of the "pay to get rated" philosophy. Take a quick look at the schools that the top 100 players have committed to -- they are mostly top Division 1 Colleges and look to be colleges ranked in the top 20 overall.....so apparently -- the college recruitment is aligned with the Perfect Game/Baseball Ameerica ratings.

Hmmm Mdbaseballcoach,

As I understand it, you are a parent of a talented HS underclassman.

Trepfan is also a parent of very talented HS upperclassman.

May I offer that I have observed each son's, and to travel out on this limb here, may I suggest MDBB, you may desire to improve (and exponentially) your learning curve along the way with regards to your son's HS career. (It goes very quickly.)

cheers

Remember, the crown weighs heavy on the head who wears it (especially when the "crowned" is touted by his daddy every frickin' day -- geesh!!

Your using up your kid's baseball mojo with your rantings on this site. ...The baseball gods do not take kindly to such self promotion.

We all hope for a healthy and productive season for our favorite players. Thankfully, the season will get here in another eight weeks and we'll get to watch some great high school baseball talent.
