Actually the season is oly 1/4 of the way completed for some; I' still trying to figure out who's idea it was to move Easter up in March.
But, I'll play along for early candidates nomination of Beach POY. One of the criteria's for me in nominating a candidate would be how much of a certain players impact resulted in his teams overall success.
I'll throw out the case of one Mr. Barry Bonds, yes he won plenty of MVP awards, but how many World Series Rings does he have?
I have no problem with any of the afore mentioned players and a couple (that I know personaly)I am rooting for their continued success; except against Landstown of course(lol).
With what others have said and coupled with the criteria I have set; I think you have to move PA's Ben Tomchick up into the top of the mix. With very few dominating pitchers in the District this year, he has to be on coach's mind when your team is scheduled to play the Cavaliers; will you be facing him today. Offensively, one game I seen he hit two HR (one a Grand Slam) with 8 RBI's.
Then you have to look at Kellam and the success they are having. Collectively, they are hitting the ball as good as anyone with what appears to be James Taylor leading the way. I belive, the move by coach Jones to place Patrick Harrington behind the plate strengthened one position and allowed other things to happen. Additionally, Patrick is offensive threat (with power) anytime he comes up to bat.
Speaking of catchers with respect to Bryce, Newman and Harrington (the ones I know), for my own nomination I would have to include Landstowns Cameron Butler. For my money, he is the one I would choose behind the plate. In game last year, I watched him gun down four would be base-stealers while picking off two others. This year he has thrown out five attempting to steal and has picked-off a runner at 2nd base.
Pitching: Pitched a 1 hit shut-out against Salem and
came in the Mills Godwin game allowng only 1 run on 2 hits in 5 2/3 inngs.
At the plate: As the Eagles lead-off hitter, he gives you several demensions. He can hit for average with good speed and has occassional pop.
He has some negative tendencies...what you think I was going to let you in on them?(lol) He as a couple triples this year and leads the team in the extra base hits category. The game against the Columbia (NY) team this past week when they threw their big pitcher at us, Cameron hit him VERY HARD with every at-bat. His first at-bat with the right conditions could of went out in left (very cold with 10 mph plus wind blowing out to right).
Yes it appears I am enamored with this young man and I mention his name alot in other post, well it just that he reminds me alot of someone I know; a former Beach POY.
His physical stature may cause him to be overlooked by some (and that irks me to no end,"it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog") but his passion for the game is in the right place; his heart.
While Landstown's defense has vastly improved which
has resulted in early season success,Cameron Butler
has bee the catalyst leading the way.
Still, there is along season ahead and number of players that have not been mentioned could eventually propel themselves to the top.
