Kudo's to a young Midlo team that battled it out yesterday to win 4-3 in the 10th. Midlo threw 2 Sophmores in innings 1-6, McCullom, a senior; in the 7th and Boggio, a Junior for the balance of the game. This win is very impressive considering the first match up was a 11-1 loss for Midlothian. Mathew Franklin, another Jr; hitting the walk off single to score the winning run. This team has gone on an impressive winning streak; (8 wins in last 9 starts) and continues to play the game with no fear. Hats off to Lowery(Man) for his outing on the hump. Great battle for both teams.

Interesting game. I got there top 4, and at that time it looked like Midlo had Lowry's number. Then he put up zeroes through the 9th, finishing by striking out the side in the 9th. Gutty performance given that he was over 130 pitches at the end.
Manchester came back for 3 in b/7 to end a shutout and tie it up. Midlo's bullpen had trouble throwing strikes. Manch needs to hold a practice where they work on "taking one for the team" because a succession of players dodged balls that could easily have nipped them, and some chased balls well out of zone early in AB's, but it seemed like they always ended up walking anyway. In the end Manch couldn't get the last hit to go ahead. Credit Midlo's 3B (Keller?) who made an outstanding diving stab of a bouncer down the line to turn the force with the bases loaded -- at least 2 runs saved on that play (and therefore the game).
If there has ever been a truer "Bugs Bunny change-up" it has to be Boggio's. He threw some so slow I don't know how they got to the plate without arc. I think he could've gotten 2-3 strikes on one pitch if the batter had swung and swung and swung as it came in like it had a drag racer's chute attached. Manch hit some deep flies out but it just seemed like nothing was carrying for either team all game. Midlo had a handful of those, too.
One question: Is there a field in our area that offers a more terrible view of the game than Midlo's field? Stands are few and not very big. No stands down the lines. Dugouts and fencing obscure some lines of sight. Monacan and Godwin may be runners up but Midlo wins this dubious prize.

You had to point that out! I couldn't agree more even thou I'm a Midlo parent but current Midlo Admin won't allow any improvements. Trust me, we've tried (we being the parents).

So.... when and how should someone step up and fix how ridiculousit was that a high school coach allowed a kid step on the mound in the 10th inning already over 130 pitches???? I know "coaches run their own program" but when is enough ,enough???
Isn't sending the kid out there for the 10th a violation of the VHSL pitching rules?

interesting point, would probably been forfeit material should manchester had recorded an out in the 10th. 1st batter hbp, next batter base hit bunt... Then he was pulled, so i guess the 10th didn't happen??? Still blows my mind that the coach can't be called 'called out" so to speak and be held responsible for this type of gross negligence of a player without being repreccusions to the team and player. Having the player just not play for the coach and sit out isn't a solution...

According to the rules:
One may pitch "in" 9 innings in one day...AND
A single pitch thrown constitutes having pitched "in" an inning.
My understanding of the rule is that he pitched the 10th when he threw a pitch regardless if an out is recorded.
As for the bigger question of policing these things........? We are told as the parents to be seen but not heard, too let the players grow up and take care of these personally. What is the kid to do in that spot?

Point taken... However they are 16 and 17 year old kids who might not know how to handle that type of situation and especially be able to handle it id game when he is being "coached on what to do" As a parent, mine would never throw that many in a HS game even if I had to pull him myself, even if he never played a hs game again. I am not jeopardizing whatever future he might have based on an "expert" deciding thats what needs to be done to win a hs game. BTW, so the coach could save pitching for the rest of the week. IMO.
Lowry pitched through 9. A new pitcher started the 10th. There was no rules violation. I'm not sure where people got the idea he pitched into the 10th, but he didn't.
As for pitch counts:
130 is very high and makes me uncomfortable. It's not automatically an indictment, though. Factors to consider would include whether the pitcher was laboring, his conditioning up to this point, how much rest he had coming in, how much rest he'll get after.
I have seen guys do this for 2-4 starts in a row and that's a concern. One start late in the season when the kid hasn't had a stress inning in quite a while is not terrible cause for alarm.
But I'm glad the rules don't permit a 10th inning, because I wouldn't have wanted to find out if the coach would've sent him out there again.

fyi... not to split hairs, but lowrie started the tenth by hitting the leadoff hitter in the foot (the winning run) and then there was a sacrafice bunt that he and the third baseman went after on the third base side that wasnt fielded in time to get the runner. Manchester then brought in Maurcio to try to get out of the jam. He struck out the 3 hitter, gave up a deep fly to ayoub which moved the runner to third and then gave up the two out hit. so to be clear he definitely pitched to two batters in the tenth.
On another note, why is how hes laboring always brought up.. There is no reason for a hs guy to throw 140. You are just asking for trouble and it just seems like misuse just to catch the prize of a win. Most of these guys are clearly not in the same shape as pros or college kids that dont even think about throwing that many. So why is it ok for hs kids to do it when they dont???
I got my impression that Lowry started the 10th from the RTD Linescore. Lowry is listed as the losing pitcher with Mauricio entering in the 10th, makes me think Mauricio allowed an inherited runner to score.
I wasn't there, if he didnt pitch in the 10th then no issue.
Lowry started the 10th and saying he threw 130 is being generous... Kind of ridiculous when you consider the risk / reward of the situation. Midlo learning to win and the youth of the program, bodes well the next two seasons... and a chance to make some noise in this season's playoffs. Only lost to Hanover/Casey 2 to 1... and have a shot to get out of the area in 4A.
I'll defer to you guys because honestly I got to talking with someone and missed the first batter of the 10th. When I looked up Mauricio was in there so I assumed he'd started the inning.
Lowry's pitch count was 131 after 9 per the guy keeping the scorebook for Midlothian. Not sure how many he threw in the 10th before being pulled.
But if you're right that he started the 10th, there could be some fallout from this.
the pitcher from Manchester did start the 10th and did put the winning run on first, then was pulled. Quite frankly, if you count the 8 pitches between innings the kid threw 210 plus pitches. As I watched him trot out for the 10th inning, I was pretty shocked he took the mound.....
