The whole thing has me floored. The team knew Jordan was in serious trouble, but no one felt it appropriate to discuss that publicly. Walter told the team about it Jan. 31, but the team thought it was going to be kept quiet. I take it the Jordan family started the news interest because they wanted the whole world to know the good news, and they wanted to express their boundless gratitude.

Walter is a tough cookie, make no mistake. Between the lines, he's in it to win it, period. But you never really know what will happen outside the lines until the test comes. I'd say he set a new standard this week.

BTW, there are others here in the same position as myself. Igball's son is a freshman, Baseballdad1228's son graduated last year, and a current recruit's mom (2011LHPmom) also posts here. Wake has really bottomed out the past few years, but as you can see, a lot of positive change is going on these days, on and off the field.

One thing is for sure- given Coach Walter's efforts in leading UNO through Katrina, and now donating a kidney to a player...when the going gets tough, you want Tom Walter in your corner.

No doubt, a very inspiring & motivating coach. If I'm a high school recruit, I would strongly consider playing for Coach Walter.

He has my vote for D1 coach of the year, and the season hasn't even started!

Great story, for the coach, for the player, for the university, for the human race. It is great to see stories like this one, bar-none. What are the odds that everything would match up from player to coach. Tens of thousands of people don't even get this opportunity so very fortunate for all parties and I wish the player and coach the best of luck.
An interesting point is what Midlo brought up, that people shouldn't confuse the selfless act Walter did as an act of some sentimental pushover. He is a dedicated hardworking aggressive coach who's all in on winning this year.

I was speaking with my son last night about the situation and he brought up that when Walter told the team about his decision it was not some softy getting emotional about Kevin's plight, but rather he was very straight forward and matter of fact about the situation and what he was going to do.(Of course the movie version with Richard Gere will include a tearful locker room scene as a homage to Brian's song.)

I've met Kevin's parents during orientation and came away with how well grounded they are.

Bobby Kennedy once said that a good deed is like a pebble cast onto a pond- its affects ripple across space and time. The positive lessons from this act will be felt and wide and for years to come.
