COX EASILY WINS RECORD NINTH WACHOVIA CUP
Cox has won the Group AAA portion of the Virginia High School League’s Wachovia Cup competition for a record ninth time. The competition was founded in 1990.
The Wachovia Cup is awarded each year in each of the VHSL’s classifications – Group A, Group AA and Group AAA – based on performances in state tournaments in 27 sports.
Cox’s victory was the third back-to-back championship for the Falcons.
Cox won this year by one of the biggest margins ever, finishing with 377.5 points, 82.5 points more than secondplace Robinson. Kellam was third with 260 points. Deep Creek was the only other South Hampton Roads school in the top 10, placing sixth with 200 points.
Cox teams reached state tournaments in eight sports, winning state titles in golf, boys volleyball and field hockey. Cox also earned 50 points for the VHSL’s sportsmanship award. Cox was second in the state in girls s****r and also earned points in boys s****r, girls tennis, girls volleyball and wrestling.
Blacksburg won in Group AA and Clarke County won in Group A.
