I just saw the movie for the first time this weekend and was amazed to see so many "scouts" in the movie using the Bushnell Speedster III radar gun. Now, I'm a fan myself and have owned a couple of them. They are just fine and quite accurate as long as you're right there, but I found it humorous to see so many of the pros in the movies use them (not to mention some of the remarkable angles from which they were used). There must have been a deal for product placement.

I enjoyed the flick, but it got the normal Disney treatment which involves completely ignoring details and creatively playing with the "true story" upon which it is based.

Funny fact not in the movie, they showed up to ASU for the try-out in USC shirts!

Yeah. It's a pretty big joke. I used them alongside my Stalker and JUGS re-branded gun (made by Stalker, weirdly enough) and both the Stalker and JUGS guns are off by maybe .2 MPH if properly tuned. The Bushnell gun is all over the place, even if you're 25 feet away. You really do get what you pay for.

Either the product placement people got Bushnell to pay a fee, or Bushnell just lent them some guns, or Bushnell was not interested so the props department called the nearest prop house and rented whatever they had in stock. Nobody sat around and discussed what brand of gun they should use. It's not that important a detail.

I don't know. I've owned a few Bushnells. The Speedster and Speedster II definitely had issues, but I've been able to use my Speedster III alongside a Stalker and it was consistently right on as long as you were within ten feet of the plate or behind the pitcher. Move much more than that away and you start seeing a consistent 4-6mph slower on the Speedster III. Having said that, my Speedster III recently bit the dust, so I'm finally going to bite the bullet and find a used Stalker.

I just found the placement in the movie funny. It didn't help my cause in convincing my wife I need to replace the Speedster with a far more expensive option. She said, "Look. The scouts are using the same gun. There is another one." I had to explaibn that no scout in his right mind would use a Bushnell. Even if you bought into the accuracy, all his little scout buddies would vote him out of the scout club.
