ee22....my son attended a camp in early january. we went a day early and took the opportunity to meet the coaches and tour the facilities. coach cohen is new, but i know a couple of kids who played for him at kentucky and they really respect him. he's assembled a good team of coaches as well. his pitching coach is butch thompson who used to coach under coach perno at georgia (i think he was also the rec. coord.) heck of a nice guy..

the campus is great and the facilities are outstanding. starkville is a small town, but the whole community is focused around the school.

good luck.......

Don't mean to pick nits here, but he took Kentucky to the middle of the SEC. In 2006 he finished first, but his cumulitve conference record 2005-2008 56-62

I didn't know what a 3rd tier school was ---- seemed as if it was one tier below a second class citizen --- so I looked it up.

Mississippi State ranks highest among Mississippi institutions in the "Best National Universities" category of the 1994 U.S. News & World Report "Best Colleges" edition.
The university appears in Quartile Three, made up of schools ranked 103rd to 153rd, among the 204 top universities listed.

Three other Mississippi institutions--University of Mississippi, University of Southern Mississippi, and Mississippi College--appear on the same list, in Quartile Four, for schools ranked 154th to 204th. Millsaps College is listed in Quartile Three of a separate category for "National Liberal Arts Colleges."

Mississippi State has been ranked in Quartile Three in three previous editions of the U.S. News directory of colleges and universities. The listings are based on surveys of 1,371 accredited institutions and take into account factors such as faculty resources, financial resources, acceptance and graduation rates, and academic reputation.

For the fourth year in a row, U.S. News ranked Harvard No. 1 among national universities.

Joining Mississippi State in Quartile Three of the rankings are institutions such as Arizona State, Auburn, Louisiana State, University of Kentucky, University of Nebraska, University of Oklahoma, and University of South Carolina.
Well put, Fungo.

To reiterate, what that means -- Quartile 3, or "Third Tier" -- is that Mississippi State is a university to attend for a very high quality education. In addition, the US News rankings are about the single worst way to judge the quality of a school, especially a state university.

What Mississippi State is is a major university with major resources and a very well-financed and successful athletic program competing in one of the toughest conferences in all of the United States.
