MLB.com released their top 100 draft prospects today. Good scouting reports and video included. I have seen many of these kids play and they are quite deserving to be on this list. I love this time of year!

Love the whole process. Hate the venue. It needs to grow-up from the current confines of the oversized walk-in closet in Secaucus, NJ: larger audience, more room for broadcast media, larger front stage, etc. Requires better production so that it grows as an event.
I write this as I'm watching the NFL draft spectacle. Apples and oranges, I know, but the NFL really worked on growing this as an event, and MLB has the same opportunity. You're not going to fill Radio City Music Hall, but something a bit larger than Studio 42.

I know they are trying but when these kids are not immediate impact players, its hard to get everyone excited. 1st pick overall might not see the show for 2-4 years in most cases.
What spot was Domingo Ayala in?
JoeMktg, I think your kid may be on this list. If I am right, you are in for a ride! Congrats!
(He is on my list of 18+ local and state players I am following for this June's draft)
If someone would have told me 6 years ago that I would be following 3 days worth of MLB draft at this point in my life...I would have choked and snorted on my Diet Pepsi.

He is, Keewart, and the ride started a bit ago. He loves interacting with everyone, but is not at all caught up in it. I wouldn't say ambivalent, but it just doesn't play a role in his every day activities and thought process. Right now, his sole focus is to help lead his team into the HS playoffs.
Very cool match-up today in a regular HS game -- Blake Rutherford (no. 7 on that MLB.com list) faced off against Hunter Greene (extremely highly ranked 2017 two-way player, being touted as having Top 10 potential in next-year's draft -- reportedly he's been as high as 97 mph this Spring).

Best of luck in whatever he chooses to do.
Puk or Pint will be the first pitcher taken in the draft is my prediction. MLB.com and a few others are bringing up character issues for Groome. If it was NFL it wouldn't matter of course.
What character issues?
I hate it when people publicize things about high school players and their character. His teammates love him. I don't think he has ever been in trouble. No reports of drugs, alcohol or anything else.
All it takes is one person saying something and the media picks up on it.
Ever think it might be coming from one person with a club that doesn't have the first pick starting a rumor?
You never know for sure, but to me the first pick this year is an easy choice.
Though I'm kind of pulling for AJ Puk, seeing he grew up in our building in Cedar Rapids. But unless someone signs for a bargain bonus, it should be Groome.
Think about this...
Groome is from New Jersey
Puk is from Iowa
Pint is from Kansas
and possibly the next pitcher would be Ian Anderson from New York

Well once a HS player is a multi million dollar prospect it is legit to discus character issues publically.
Yes he is a HS kid but he will be very rich in a few months. If you spend so much character is something to consider.
However in groomes case I agree that there is no character issue. His coaching staff and anyone else knew that he was at img. They would have needed to check the rules and notify the HS sports governing body in time. Groome did not try to cover up anything, people knew what was going on. I see no issue with him, teams are going to take the best talent.
I don't see them taking puk, just not polished enough for number 1 as a college pitcher.
If it had not already been posted a few other places I would not of mentioned the character issue. But someone would of asked me right after I said Puk and Pint are now in the running for 1st pitcher and maybe 1-1.
DOMINIK85 I understand your point, these kids have earned their fortune, and their fame. Sometimes the fame doesn't seem fair when you talk about a 17-18 year old. I have seen it work both ways. Agents are always trying to minimize or maximize depending on who and what.
I just don't think any HS kid should be accused in any publication with having character issues. Especially one that has never been in trouble. I would go so far as to say anyone that would write or publish that crap would have questionable character. Scouting departments do there own evaluations regarding make up. But they never publish what they find out or think.
That said, sometimes the talent is so great, teams will take a chance on questionable make up. Even if they have the first over all pick. Do a search on the 2004 MLB draft and you'll see one of the biggest mistakes.
I am on the AJ Puk bandwagon...for obvious reasons!
PGSTAFF,
I would argue that Matt Bush has turned around quite a bit, and although the Padres organization will likely never be the beneficiaries of his talent the Rangers soon will be. Also wasn't that move largely a play to save money? I was 5 when that went down so obviously you probably have a lot more insight on the logic behind it.
Yes it was a money saving move. However Matt was considered one of the top high school prospects at the time. He was the MVP of our very first Aflac game in 2003. He was drafted as a shortstop. I pull for anyone that tries to turn their life around for the better. I hope he realizes how short the rope is. If he stays off the booze, he might just make it big. Hope that is what happens.
For any of you late nighters Daron Sutton is hosting Perfect Game's MLB Round Trip show right now on the Sirius MLB radio network.
PGSTAFF, is this show anywhere to be found now or just live?
BA released their version of the mock draft. And they are liking Puk 1-1 Pint 1-3, and Groome at 1-5.
ESPN had coverage of a bunch of prospects yesterday and today (subscription req'd):

Couple of tidbits: Matt Manning may go Top 5; Delvin Perez ran a 6.23 sixty; and Hunter Greene '17 (who was the pitcher in the video I posted on this thread last week) is on the radar for the first-round next year.
Word to the 2017 potential draftee families: BUDGET FOR PRE-DRAFT WORKOUTS.
Some clubs do not host pre-draft workouts. Those that do have them at their stadium (or one of their minor league facilities close to their stadium), at their spring training facility, in Atlanta, or they break it up into regional workouts (east and west). A few have a combination of some or all of the above.
Whatever the case is:
- Set aside budget for T&E. The travel will primarily take place between the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend and draft day.
- Recognize that your son will not be able to attend all of them as there are conflicts where many workouts take place on the same day in different locales, or the next day where it's impossible to physically handle a series of workouts, e.g., day 1 in Seattle, day 2 in Milwaukee, day 3 in Phoenix, day 4 in Atlanta, etc.
- Keep your receipts, as you may have the opportunity to be reimbursed by the team that signs your son (but only those expenses associated with that team).
JOEMKTG Signing bonus in a few weeks should cover these expenses. Will you be attending any of these with him?

Yes: we'll be attending some of them. But it's not my signing bonus, if he signs! However, I've made it clear that I'm first in line. PAYBACK, BABY!!!!
At what age should we start keeping a running tab? I've probably got $800 tied up in my 10yo so far but haven't kept good records. Do these kids usually require receipts for reimbursement like the MLB teams do?

$800 thru 10U? That's it? Nice job!!

He might sneak up and be the first HS lefty to go in the draft, and there is some kid named Pint in Kansas that is pretty good too!
