MLB opening an academy in brazil

Read in espn magazine that MLB is opening up an academy in Brazil. What about opening up some academys where the game is actually played? USA. I for one would welcome some sort of Academy or even a facility in the inner cities that would help players. I know there is talent out there and they are looking for it but what about starting right in your backyard.

It’s one thing to look for talent, but these academies in my opinion find athletically gifted boys and determine that they will turn them into baseball players. Almost like puppy mills.

Why cant MLB do that here. Is it any different than Tech schools? There is plenty of talent right here in the USA. I can speak about nyc and the shortage of facilities and costs of those that are available make it sort of exclusive. There is a gap and MLB can address it instead of sending $$$ overseas.

I am not talking about RBI. I am aware of this program and I know that MLB gives money and equipment,pennies really, I am talking about Academys just as they have overseas.

What's the problem with it? If Obama can promise 2B to Brazil to develope their oil so we can import it, why sould MLB not help out there also? Ooop's did I just say that, now I am going to have to change my name, address, phone #, get fake ID

Yes, they may be developing a few players in South America but I think its all about developing a interest in basebhall and creating another market to sell their product.

I wonder what legal issues/bad P/R and compliance costs/nightmare MLB would incur to have an "academy" in the US. Its hard enough dealing with payroll,OSHA, benefits etc.. for 18+ year olds. let alone minors.

Folks its all about business, $$$. They turn out 16 year kids (or kids who claim to be 16) and pay pennies on the dollar for most of them. It would be nice if opening new markets was their goal.
