Agreed. Some folks talk about losing the 'human elemement' but what they're really saying is 'there was a bad call in my team's favor last night'. Personally I can't stand it when a bad call affects the outcome of a game. Sounds like MLB is taking the right approach in testing the implementation of it for a while first too.
I'm for it as long as it doesn't take forever to make a decision. If you stick with fair / foul and homerun or not then it won't.

If we have the technology to get the right decision then we need to use it.

I wonder if they are going to let umpires make challenges like in football or will it be a replay ump to make the decision like college football?

Can you guarantee this?

Of course not....bad calls are part of the game have been for 100 years. What about bases loaded, 2 out, full count. ump calls a strke or was it a ball? where does it end?
I say leave the game alone.
I know of one long time great umpire who might vote for instant replay!

In the 1985 World Series (Game 6) he made a call that many feel ended up costing the St Louis Cardinals the World Championship. All the replays showed it was one of the worst calls (mistakes) ever made.

Some might say, that’s OK it’s part of the game. However, that game never ended for Don. He and his family received hate mail and death threats for many years. His phone number and home address were given out over St Louis radio stations. He ended up getting the FBI to protect him.

All of that could have been avoided if they would have had instant replay. And maybe the Kansas City Royals wouldn’t have won the World Championship that year.

He called him SAFE!
I agree that human error on the part of the umpires is part of the "mystique" of baseball but I can see using instant replay for foul/fair balls and home runs what with the way the stadiums have set up the outfield fences/walls as they have especially since umpires don't leave the infield anymore to make outfield calls..

A question: why is the foul pole in fair territory? The pole is actually a fair pole!!!
I'm not in favor of it. Sure, I want the umpires to get the calls right, but it shall be interesting to see what happens.

Now, won't an umpire have to call anything close a fair ball so it can be played out? If he calls it foul and it was actually fair, how exactly are they going to place runners fairly?

In the Yankees-Mets game the other night, the umpire had the call right. Why was another umpire allowed to change the call??!!??

I guess this means there is no need to add the additional two umpires down the lines in the postseason..

It ends where you say it ends. Instant replay is to be used for THIS and leave it alone. Other sports do this and it works fine overall. Will there still be mistakes - yes because instant replay isn't a cureall but it does help prevent a lot of bad calls.

The human element will always be there because the human element is still there in football and other sports.

You mentioned balls and strikes - well that is just like a holding call in football. When they show replays of a good run if you watch the linemen you will always see one of them holding. It doesn't get called through replay because it's left up to the judgment of the referee. Sometimes they call it and it wasn't and sometimes it needs to be called and it's not.

Bulldog mentioned about calling it fair and then going back to sort things out. That is pretty much what happens now with trapped balls in the outfield. If a ball is lodged in the wall and the OF puts their hands up the umps let the play happen and then go see if the ball is lodged and if it is then reset the runners where they need be.

It wouldn't be any different or harder if they used instant replay - it just be more accurate.
PG-You know my brother is wearing that '85 Series ring everyhere he goes, and doesn't feel one bit guilty! Big Grin

Hey, I felt sorry for the Cardinals, but as long as baseball continues to live in the dark ages these things are going to continue.

Things even out? The player that was cheated out of a homerun will be given one he didn't deserve???
