For those who think they have it takes, or just want to get on the radar, these are eye openers to prove your worth to MLB scouts. Fill out a form and a history starts on that player. The guarantee is there are scouts there for MLB. They will put you through drills same as any other tryout. There may be other scouts there who will show interest. One did I mention FREE.

These level the field for all players, nobody knows you anyone else, however you only get to declare one position to tryout for. It's all about having fun and drawing interest as opposed to 'getting picked'. A good experience overall.

My son went this route at 17 (almost 18). It was a great starting point that has gone steps further.
coach v, holden
i think it's up to the area scout,or an enterprising bird dog to hold a tryout. they aren't all posted on the mlb site, just the bigger ones i think.you may want to check each team's site.
the pirates and twins have had them in nh in the past. as pointed out they are free and they put you through the paces. as for the benifit for a 16 yr old? never hurts to see where you stand against older players, and be seen by a scout or two.and the price is right.

As stated earlier, is there eligibility issuse towards college (NCAA Rules)?

Tryouts don't cause eligibility problems. The basic purpose of the rules is to keep people from disguising actual play or financial compensation by calling it a tryout.

Here is the rule from the D1 manual (the D2 manual is less restrictive)
12.2 Involvement with profesional teams
12.2.1 Tryouts.
12.2.1.1 Tryout Before Enrollment.
A student-athlete remains eligible in a sport even though, prior to enrollment in a collegiate institution, the student-athlete may have tried out with a professional athletics team in a sport or received not more than one expense-paid visit from each professional team (or a combine including that team), provided such a visit did not exceed 48 hours and any payment or compensation in connection with the visit was not in excess of actual and necessary expenses. A self-financed tryout may be for any length of time.
.....
12.2.1.2 Tryout After Enrollment. After initial full-time collegiate enrollment, an individual who has eligibility remaining may try out with a professional athletics team (or participate in a combine including that team) at any time, provided the individual does not miss class. The individual may receive actual and necessary expenses in conjunction with one 48-hour tryout per professional team (or a combine including that team). The 48-hour tryout period shall begin at the time the individual arrives at the tryout location. At the completion of the 48-hour period, the individual must depart the location of the tryout immediately in order to receive return transportation expenses. A tryout may extend beyond 48 hours if the individual self-finances additional expenses, including return transportation. A self-financed tryout may be for any length of time, provided the individual does not miss class.

Being invited to a teams pre-draft work out indicates that your Son has already caught the eye of a scout for the inviting team. The scout probably wants your Son to attend so that a crosschecker can watch your Son and potentially consider him a for the draft. Congratulations!

Alternatively, anyone can show up at the above mentioned MLB tryouts.
