I can't believe The Queen jumped out of a helicopter!

What did everyone think of the opening ceremonies? Bob Costas is running a close second to Tim McCarver, but, overall, I enjoyed the presentation. I wish we could have heard more of the music and less blathering. Matt Lauer's fun facts were interesting, but Costas' attempt at ad-libbing humor was mostly Roll Eyes

USA parade dress was a little too conservative. I could do without the big logo on the blazer. Many countries had very catchy outfits. How bout the Czech Republic in their garden boots? Smile

The stadium light show was spectacular. Paul McCartney wrapped things up pretty well.

I loved the Opening Ceremonies. One of the few Olympic locations I've visited, which is cool.

I thought Bob Costas was much better than Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera. His comment about Dear Leader was hilarious!

NBC had plenty of time to edit - feel like I missed out on some of the music and some tableaux. So much going on. The Queen's movie debut was fantastic, though I though she looked tired. The stunt double's costume included pink bloomers! lol

Have you ever watched international ping pong? I can smash a ball to the other side of a tennis court. Hitting a ping pong ball as hard as these guys do and have it hit the other side of the table is amazing. And they work hard too.

When I was in China on the All-American Ping Pong team, I just loved playing ping-pong with my Flexolite ping pong paddle.

As a ping pong player myself, I now how hard it is to hit a smashing ball although typically not as hard as these guys.

What I don't get is why sports like bowling aren't in the olympics but ping pong is. Bowling should definitely be an olympic sport.

I'd rather see people trying to hit a baseball than one of those ping pong balls. I guess the IOC disagrees.

Trampolining and racewalking are Olympic sports as well. Confused

Wasn't it Jim Rome who said something about bowling to the effect of, any activity that becomes easier the more you drink is not a sport?

LOL. I dunno. About the only thing I know about Jim Rome was an interview with Jim Everett by calling him Chrissy Everett throughout rhe interview to goad Everett into a fight on the set.

Gotwood...I think my oldest son could be a medal contender in a "Beer Pong" event! From what I've been told, he's pretty good....makes a parent so proud Roll Eyes

Although would have loved to see the US get a medal, it was fun watching the British men's gymnastic team get the bronze yesterday! Not sure about that challenge by Japan though!

What a stupid question... The other guys are Olympians too....
I've found the NBC announcing team to be well below average. The candid interviews aren't well done. In the past from having known athletes being interviewed I knew the candids were sometimes fraudulent PR. One athlete was described as quiet, introspective and keeps to himself. You would be too if everyone on the team hated you. He was shown in the airport getting a kiss goodbye from his girlfriend. I was wondering where they hired the girl. I knew he didn't have a girlfriend. He never had a girlfriend that hot.

The game announcers don't do a very good job of explaining the game to the casual viewer. There have been times in beach volleyball where they've used terms the casual fan wouldn't have a clue what they mean. The field hockey announcer said the field was watered down. She didn't explain why or the effect. I got the information in a tweet from a team member.

Then there's the Bob Costas BS. Wilt Chamberlain was not the first beach vollleyball star before Karch Kiraly. Singin Smith was the big star before Kiraly. He was the first to 100 wins. Kiraly was third. Kiraly retired with the most wins. Chamberlain wasn't even a star. He played six man for a team called The Kettle They were a bunch of arrogant dlckhe@ds. Any team that arrogant should win more than they won. It's appropriate they were sponsored by a place drunks go to eat at 3am.

All of us who played two man made fun of them for thinking they were special. Chamberlain was old and immobile. Guys eight inches shorter could out jump him. The only think opposing teams had to be careful about was not leaving the ball on the net near him. His own team had to provide him perfect sets.

No. They get taxed on the money they receive for winning one.

They also get paid .... In the U.S., gold medal winners get $25,000, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. This is not government money, it's paid by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

However, I would think any high school or college athlete would have to pass on the medal bonuses to maintain amateur status.
