Son is home for the summer.  We're watching Arizona v Coastal game #2 and one of his HS friends stopped by.  I coached both in HS and a year of summer college.  They/we made a deep HS playoff run before losing in semi's when friend failed to step on home plate in extra innings.  Son and friend both ended up in San Diego as roommates but playing for rival JC's.  Ginkel is throwing well for Arizona.  Both son and friend had one AB against him two years ago in JC.  Both hit hard line drives.  Son's D2 was actively recruiting friend last month before friend decided on another school.  Friend's new school is six hours away.  He is in a texting group , coordinating the roommate situation.  They shared which HS they went to.  Yup, the other guy went to the HS that beat them in the semi game...  "are you the dude that missed home plate?"

Small world.

Incredibly small world.  I had posted elsewhere a few days ago about UCSB pitcher Trevor Bettencourt.  What I didn't say was as I watched that game something kept gnawing at me - that somehow I knew that kid.  Late in the game I finally looked him up to confirm it was who I thought.  Probably got confused due to his NorCal->TN->UCSB route, but still.

Virtually every high level West Coast college and any MLB/MiLB game I watch now has someone I know or ran across somewhere on two sons' road in baseball.  Pretty cool - and even more cool to know that nearly every one of them is a good person.
