First off, what a great site! So glad i found it. Second, i need some help. I have a 13yr old ball player playing competitive baseball in the Virginia Beach area and we will be moving to San Diego in early to mid August. We are looking for a program that is more about player development. I have tried to search the web for teams in the San Diego area, but i thought i would seek some advice here. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Welcome. All I can say is that you are going to be loving the weather in SD after coming from Va!!!

I am not sure about how they develop players, etc, but one of the premier programs for players in the 16+ age group in So Cal is the San Diego Show. (actually probably in the country) They have a website so you can check them out. When my son was 16-17 they always ran out very very very competitive teams. (three very's means good!)

Good luck!

Hi bballdad,

My son played for the SD SHOW last summer/fall, they have a great program. We are currently at a tournament in Arizona, but I'll be happy to send you a PM when we get back. My son also has a couple friends that are playing with the SD Gamers, both teams have 14U programs.

Welcome to this site, you have a ton of information at your fingertips.
You are moving to an area full of great baseball. We just got back from tourny in Arizona. Lots of great teams from Cali there. Gorrilla Baseball, Team Anderson, Placentia Mustangs, SD Show, Gamers, Team Rawlings, may not all be from SD area but these kids were polished. Good luck, look up the teams entered at USA Baseball West Championships and go from there maybe. We were in the 16's with a 15u team out of Texas.
The first thing to ask, is where your wife's job might be located. You really don't want to live terribly far from where she will work.

That said my preference from living there leaned towards North County. When I first moved their the local league was La Costa Canyon, Torrey Pines, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Carmel Mt. Ranch and Westview. Since then there has been some realignment but that was a very tough conference. The thing is it really doesn't matter where you live and doesn't matter what school you attend.

My son's old school SFC is a small private and loaded with talent despite the size. And they play against teams with kids like Cody Poteet, and Jose Vizcaino's son, in other words some high level prospects. Cathedral Catholic is loaded as well and my point is, it really doesn't matter what program you choose. This is very important to remember, some of the highest recruited kids play at small schools as well as big schools.

If I were you, I'd be choosing the closest school to work where the academics are good and you can afford a house.

We personally left SD for Orlando due to a company move, and as much as I miss it, we were just barely getting by. You can't begin to compare the cost of living and how much it will eat you alive especially if you are not working.

It's hard to get a coaching gig here because there are so many for MILB or D1 type kids who land back in town and become good candidates for those jobs. Not saying you can't, it's just that you are starting fresh without a network of contacts. If you were a teacher also, that's not going to hurt, but you'll have to get certified, I am not sure about the reciprocity.
