Last night my freshman catcher got the word he would be moving up to varsity. He's not sure if its permanent or a tryout, but he's really excited. I'm very proud of him because he worked his butt off to get the opportunity. He had hoped to make varsity from the get go, and was disappointed when he didnt make it. But he didn't sulk, and told me he was going to work so hard, they were going to have to bring him up. He has been solid defensively all season, but started the year in the first extended hitting slump of his life. Every weekend he'd ask to go to the batting cage saturday and sunday. After a lot of swings and a very sore armed dad, he got his groove back and is leading the JV team in batting average. Its nice to see that all his hard work has payed off, at least for one game.

I agree TR but unfortunately we (parents) don't get any say in that. My daughter went through that in HS softball; was on the JV team as a freshman pitcher and kept getting "called up" to the varsity only to typically sit most of the time. She played some, enough to letter, but not as much as she wanted.
when my son was a frosh his varsity coach asked him to stay down on the JV so he could play every day---he had a senior in his position and was loyal to his seniors, right or wrong that was what it was, and my son would not get that much time on the field---it was the best thing that could have happened for my son

Hey, but it's possible to play a lot-- if your team is weak. My frosh son has caught every JV game, and part of nearly every Varsity game. Lotsa experience this year, for sure: lotsa losses on Varsity, lotsa wins on JV. I'm not even sure it's legal to play him in so many games... not sure of the rule.

After four 7 inning games this week and two practices, he's really tired. And there's another JV game tomorrow.
Son has been up for three games so far. He sat out the first game, started and played the whole second game, and sat the third game. He played well in the game he was in, making a play at the plate and no passed balls, but he was DH'd for. They have a game on friday, and he says if he doesnt play he will ask the coach if he can go back down to JV. Do you guys think this is a wise move? JV and Varsity play at the same time, so he cant do both.
