I am currently a second semester college freshman that has played baseball since the age of 5, at every competetive level imaginable, pitched in the regional finals of the state tournament, etc. While in high school, it became more of a priority to me to pursue education at a very successful public university close to home, that also happens to be a sports powerhouse. I decided I would rather take my chances pursuing a walk-on spot and go to a school I absolutely loved than go to low level D1 that I didn't particularly like. When I tried out, I made it extremely far, was invited to participate in the fall season, and ultimately was told by the coaching staff that it would be difficult for me to get playing time with 18 scholarship pitchers on the team and that they would help me with a transfer to a more of a mid major program. I decided I would rather just stay at school and pursue my academics and just be a normal kid for once, which really has been awesome. I found no shame in making it as far as I did, being one of 50+ walkons to make it through the fall season at a school that is ranked top 20 preseason nationally. I have learned a lot from the game of baseball and am sure I will be coaching in the near future giving back all that was given to me. This site helped me greatly through my recruiting journey, and I am available to all high school players, parents, other college students if they ever are seeking advice. Thanks again to everybody on the site for the advice they have thrown my way.

gametime24,

great post. congratulations on having the courage to walk try and be a walk on, and also having the courage to hang the cleats up when you felt it was time. it will come for most of the boys of parents on this site.I am happy to see you walk away still loving the game of baseball and realizing how much it gave you in your young life. and hope you do get involved in another way. good luck on your education, sounds like your a good student who will do very well.
gametime24 - one of the truly great posts of all time imho on the hsbbweb. Not only have you become a great writer but a great thinker as well. I couldn't be prouder for a young man who gave it his best shot. That is all any parent ever asks from their kids. That is what winning in life is all about. The fact that you want to give back for all you have been given only demonstrates your fine character. A truly emotional post that I will never forget.
Gametime, your post will in fact most likely help me as a Father one day when and if my son comes to this decision to not be ashamed of his accomplishments.

Thank you for not only having the courage to realize it was time to walk away from the game and pursue education, but sharing with us all this adventure that we can all learn from.

I applaud you.
