There have been so many stories here lately how people are "upset" with their son's plight in baseball, I thought I would share this one....

I met him five years ago as our sons were about to enroll at Coastal Carolina. Both our sons were deep in the State high school playoffs at the time, his in Illinois, mine from Ohio. We started talking on the phone and I could tell immediately he was different than most other parents I knew. He is the type of guy where the glass could be a few drops from empty and he could see it a few drops from full...

We finally met face-to-face as we checked our sons in school and we immediately began plotting how we would meet in Omaha someday for the College World Series. The following spring, both our sons were redshirted and we both for the first time could truly empathise with parents whose kids were not getting to play....

The following fall, I saw his son pitch in the annual fall world series and he dominated his performances - mainly as a matchup lefty out of the bullpen. That spring he seemed to have carved a role out for himself but suffered an ankle injury a week before the season started. It just wasn't in the cards for him and another season slipped away....

At the end of the season, when I spoke to Smokey, he told me his son was transferring to a top D3 school known for Dentistry (a profession in their family) and oh btw, the school is annually ranked in the top 20. Not ONCE did I hear an ounce of bitterness in his voice. No one has been more supportive of my son in his career and for that (Jim) I thank you...

There was an adjustment for the young man to say the least last year. Things were not quite as organized or as intense as they were previously.

This year, all the pieces have come into place for this young man. One of the most dominant left-handed starters in the country imho with a 1.18 ERA and named conference pitcher of the week. Talk about waiting your turn.. talk about never giving up... talk about maintaining a POSITIVE attitude at all times... I couldn't be happier for the young man or his family Smile Here is a link to the story:

It just goes to show you what we talk about all the time here. Baseball is not a sprint is a marathon. Its not where you start or how you start its how you finish. Its not where you are but what you do where you are. I got a bunch more but they all apply.

When you keep a good attitude and you never allow negatives today to keep you from having positives tomorrow anything is possible. I love this story.
Cleveland Dad,

Thanks so much for sharing the link with us. Ole Smokey is the first to post on someone elses kid and wouldnt think about doing it in fear of being the over proud papa type bragger.
You are correct in everything about Jim and I can't say enough about Joe. I had the opportunity to spend a small amount of time as one of his coachs (Summer) and he is the type young man that keeps me coaching.

I am not sure where Joesephs future lies, but no matter the field, he will be successful.
Smokey,
time for a pop at Led's place again. Tell Joeseph hello!

Dan,

I just wanted to thank you for all the kind words. Please accept my apologies for not responding sooner. Grandma Smokey has been in the hospital for the last two weeks after open heart surgery. I was taken back by your thread and honestly didn’t know how to respond. “I’m a little verklempt.”

The invitation still stands. Steaks are on me when Coastal makes it to Omaha – Omaha Prime. BTW – your one to talk. “Father & Son Bort” are cut from the same clothe. Dan fails to mention that Tyler worked himself into a starting SS position after being red-shirted his freshman year and look at him now! Coastal plays the game the right way…

For anyone listening – take it from me, this journey goes by way too fast – enjoy the moment, make memories, have fun, and respect the game.

DeuceDoc – Name the night and I’ll meet you at Led’s. We need to catch up. You had a lot to do with how Joe plays the game… Thanks!
