OK, first of all my name is Cody Clinton, I'm a 2006 CF/OF from Boca Raton, FL.

This is my current situation...

I had an outstanding junior year. I finished second in batting average (.505) in Palm Beach County (which produced four players chosen in the first four rounds and 7 total draft picks) and led in hits. I finished the season with 3 homers, led in doubles with 17, drove in 28 and scored 29 runs. I also stole 10 bases (7.1 60-yard) and recorded 10 outfield assists (86 Gun Reading from CF).

My problem: I lack almost any exposure. I play football, and am a mid-level D-I prospect at quarterback, so football has made it nearly impossible to attend any Perfect Game tournaments or Showcases. I know my future is in baseball, but now football has screwed things up a bit.

My current recruiting situation: I have been asked to do a private workout for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the only team that saw me play last year (because they were looking at another player). I have been contacted by nearly no schools, because I have been unable to attend any camps. I know this will change after I attend my first Perfect Game event, but I don't know if it's too late for me to get into a school I believe I have the ability to play at, or if it's too late to raise my stock in the draft.

Can anyone help me out?

I notice you posted in another thread looking to get on team for Jupiter

In my opinion that would be a grave mistake IF you are not in baseball shape--since you play football I would venture to guess that you are not.

I would think that schools based on your spring HS season would be aware of you--- what has your HS coach done for you

Yes there is time-- give me a call if you wish and lets talk about it and see how you can recoup the lost time

I look forward to hearing from you

Bobcats,

After reading you're reply I just want to point something out,

Your Coach went through the whole Recruiting process not too long ago.

It doesn't matter what level he played at, he still went through the process, like he may of gotten letters and recrutied by DI and chose DII for whatever reason.

Just because a guy didn't play play DI doesn't mean he doesn't know as much about the recruiting process cut him some slack.

I'm playing NAIA so in your mind does that mean I don't know alot about being recruited?

I got recruited by 11 Colleges, varying from DI, DII, DIII, JUCO, and NAIA, along with working out for MLB teams. There's tons of reasons as to why guys don't go play DI.

Keep that in mind.
You have a very good point...

It's just extremely frustrating for me right now to have to sit and watch kids that I've played with for the last six years sign with big D-I programs while I'm sitting here waiting.

David Christansen and Sean Ochinko are two kids that I played with for four years, and they just signed with Miami and LSU. A few years ago, Christansen sat the bench, Ochinko split time at catcher, and I played every inning and hit clean-up. Here we are three years later and I'm still out-playing them both, ranked Palm Beach County's best overall player, and I'm left waiting because I have zero exposure. I'm just trying to find a solution...

Bobcats I feel you're pain

I'm from Canada, and had to do all the promoting myself, I only attended Shocase my Senior year because I just found out about them my Senior year. Be Proactive, the old addage if you're good they will find doesn't apply to everyone.

Some of this might help you out, along with talking to Tom.

Showcases:
Be is Perfect Game, College Select or any other major recruiting service
It's advised that you do attend a showcase because that way you will have knowledge of where you stand in relation to others as well it allows for you to know what level you are able to play at Personally I recommend Perfect Game USA they are the best of the best and most well known and highly regarded and offer you the most for your money
http://www.perfectgame.org

MLB Open Tryout Camps
1.) They are free, you might as well go to them
2a.) Looks good on a letter to a Coach
2b.) Gives you a scout(s) name to include in the letter to the Coach
3.) Great experience gained from attending these

NOTE* ANY Showcase or Camp you attend (be it PG, College Select, MLB or College Specific) you gain invaluable experience from. Going to these not only shows you the talent you're competing against and where you stand, but how to control yourself and your emotions while being at a high profile event.

School Searches
1a.) NCAA DI DII & DIII http://www.ncaa.org
1b.) Keep in mind that you can not workout with a team during a vist for NCAA. Chek out the site for more info
1c.) Keep in mind that there are Dead periods and Early signing periods for NCAA. Check out the site for more info
2.) NAIA http://naia.collegesports.com/
3.) NJCAA http://www.njcaa.org/
4a.) Inquire about Other scholarships i.e. Entrance Mark Schollys
4b.) Inquire about International Student Financial Aid

Looking At Schools
This is the hardest thing to do
Do your research on the Coaching Staff as well see what they have done not only as a Coach but as a player, this can help you determine whether or not you want to go to that school.

Here are some of the Most Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What type of school do I look at?
A: Approach it like you would search for a school up here. Look at Education FIRST then look at Baseball SECOND. IF the school is appealing to your EDUCATION needs and you think it would be a good school put it on your list. REMEMBER-You are a STUDENT-ATHLETE, Student comes BEFORE Athlete

Q: Where do I start?
A: Just get a list of schools found on any of the sites provided on this post and pick one school at random and start there and work your way through the list

Q: How do I cut down on the number of schools to look at?
A: Some people don't want to be far away from home so do a proximity search within the distance that you are comfortable of being away from home. This will automatically rule out a large number of schools. If you know you can only attend schools with Athletic schollys and Financial Aid run a search and get your new list. A note NCAA DIII Doesn't provide Athletic Schollys, Keep this in mind when doing your search

Letter to send out to Schools
Use the shell that is found on the good ol'HSBBW it's one of the best I've seen and I used it myself to send letters out to the schools that recruited me
http://www.hsbaseballweb.com/intro_letter.htm

Visits
1.) Find out if it's an official visit or not
2.) See what expenses they can cover for your trip
3.) Talk to Players while you're there to get a feel for the program, school and coaching staff. Talk to as many players as you can, don't be shy they'll talk to you and tell you their honest impression of everything
4.) See if your able to work out when you go on your visit, and what all is going to be required of you on the field

Clothing, and Etiquette on a Visit
5a.) Wear dress pants and a nice shirt, don't show up in jeans and a t-shirt
5b.) Remember you're making a first impression about yourself
5c.) The Coach wants to make sure that the players he brings in are guys who will represent the school in a professional manner
5d.) Speak properly, no slang or jargon unless you're on the field
5e.) Watch the profanity, keep it at a minimum if any at all

Some Questions to ask Coaches (either on the phone or during a visit)
1a.) What's your Coaching Philisophy?
1b.) How much playing time would I be looking at getting?
2.) What type of role do you see me playing when I come to this school?
3.) Is there any other way I can get more Financial Aid from the school?
4.) What's the living arrangements like?
5a.) Hazing, is it allowed?
5b.) What happens if it does happen?
6a.) What's the teams policies in regards to drinking and drugs?
6b.) How often is there Drug testing?
7a.) How do you get to away games?
7b.) How are you supposed to get to home games and practises (if diamond is not on campus?)
8a.) What's the policy to missing school?
8b.) What's the policiy to missing school due to Baseball?
8c.) What's the teams policy on the different holidays ie our Thanksgiving vs. theirs?
8d.) How does the program handle class schedules ie do all players need to be done school at a certain time during the corse of a week and what happens if a class can't be scheduled prior to the time that the Coach has requested?

Grades
1.) Buckle down and get your marks up to a good level or make sure to keep them at a good level if they already are there
2.) Aim as high as you can, most schools will give you a scholly for your marks as well

Working out both Offseaon and Inseason
1.) Make sure your lifting weights and doing cardio work all the time during the school season, most Highschools have a gym that they allow for students to use for a minimal cost. If this isn't provided go to a local gym like Goodlife which costs roughly $24/bi weekly
2.) Throwing and Hitting. This is probably the hardest thing for us to do. If there's not a place that you can use indoor then there's really not much you can do except for dry work
Networking
Just like in business knowing the right people pays off.
1.) Don't be afraid to go out of your way to talk to people if you're at a Showcase, Camp or Workout.
2.) Sometimes the best way to find out whoose looking for what type of players comes through talking to people who are at the event you're at.
3.) The more people that know you the more you get talked about, all you have to worry about is that they only say good things about you, which is something that you can control.

Any school that you talk to make sure you have a list somewhere's of who you talked to when you talked to them and what was discussed during each and everytime
Well, I have been invited to the World Showcase in Ft. Myers this January, so I will definitely be going to that. I've been invited to several showcases before, but something has always come up and stopped me from going. So hopefully I will get the exposure I need from the World Showcase and get some offers and more private workouts coming out of that...
Hi Cody,

I am really not trying to promote Players-Profile but this is the type of service that need. We have placed over 70 players the past 24 months into college programs. We have over 1,000 member college baseball coaches in our program. Here is how it works. We have a video protocol that you follow. You send in your video footage and we place this on your personal web page along with your academic, athletic, and personal information. You now have access to our database of over 1,000 college coaches in the US. You can e-mail the coaches of the programs that you wish to attend.

I also have a picture and several articles on me attached, but I figured that would be too long of a post... I've e-mailed my bio to several schools, few followed up. What should I do with it now? Send it out through the mail to my schools of interest with a letter attached?

Bobcats....CALL JERRY FORD AT PERFECT GAME IMMEDIATELY AND TELL HIM YOUR SITUATION.

Here's what I think happened to you...Because of your success in football, the baseball coaches figure that you're going to go to college to play football....the college football coaches, on the other other hand, think that you are heading for baseball.

You have to make a decision and it appears that you have made that decision as to what you will do or what sport you will play at the next level.

You'll be fine...always have the juco route as an option if the scenario doesn't unfold as you intend it for yourself.

Don't be discouraged. Brighter days ahead.

If you're over 18, I'll be happy to talk with you. If you're not, ask mom and dad to call me and we can talk. 815-469-4520

I coached a very competitive summer baseball team in 2002. All of the players on that team are playing in D1 programs and 1 was a 4th round draft choice out of high school. My older son, Paul, played for Mississippi State and was a 8th rounder in 1993.

Lots of experience with situations such as yours.
I am 18, so I will certainly give you a call. I need as much help as I can get right now...

I think your theory is right on the money... I haven't received nearly the interest in football as I was told by almost everyone I would (I still receive letters daily from numerous schools, but still lack the actual offers) and absolutely no where near what I expected I would for baseball, granted I am at fault for that because in baseball you have to find them, because most of the time they won't find you... I will contact Mr. Ford from Perfect Game right away. Thanks for your help!
Cody, nice resume. I would suggest you add one thing, though, that I think you simply forgot to put on there. What is your GPA? Every college coach will need to know it, and also know if you have registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse. I'd put that on the resume too, if you've done it. If you haven't yet done it, get it taken care of right away.
Cody,
Is your desire to play baseball or football in college? Have you not been signed for football?
I did not see your name listed in scout.com football recruiting.
It surprises me that you have gone unnoticed for baseball if you are a high profile player for football. The two sometimes goes hand in hand down in our neighborhood, making yu valuable as a two sport player. I understand that football most probably has taken up most of your time.
I would forward your resume, but thre is no GPA listed.

Actually I'm on all of Scout.com's florida prospect rankings... But my player profile on scout is under Mark Clinton (that is my real name, Cody is my middle but I've gone by it my whole life). This is one of the stories they did on me over the summer:

IN THE HUDDLE: Cody Clinton

Cody Clinton, BOCA RATON By Larry Blustein
Publisher
Date: Apr 30, 2005

There are some impressive two-sport stars in the state of Florida this coming season, but this Palm Beach County standout could emerge as one of the finest in football and on the baseball field.

During the spring and into the summer, http://www.floridakids.us will bring you our IN THE HUDDLE segments with football players throughout the state of Florida.

These are similar to the evaluations we pass on to the hundreds of colleges who visit our website, call us on the phone and correspond via e-mail.

Here is another top football player to keep an eye on this season – and beyond.

PLAYER: Cody Clinton
POSITION: QB
SCHOOL: Boca Raton Community School
HEIGHT: 6-2
WEIGHT: 205
40 SPEED: 4.69
HEAD COACH: Rick Swain
http://www.floridakids.us Pre-Spring Rating: 101

A few years back, when I had the pleasure of spending some time with Rick Swain, who then coached at Gainesville High, he told me that if athletes are willing to make a commitment, they would succeed.

Having coached some impressive athletes such as Clinton Portis and Ian Scott, you have to understand that his success has centered around hard work and dedication to the sport.

When I ran into him last summer, at the Univerdity of South Florida Passing Camp in Tampa, he told me that his young Bobcats would be a team to watch for in the future. While a few key athletes left the school to head up to the Space Coast this season, there was plenty of quality coming back this season, where this program is expected to accomplish some great things.

On the of the players who will make the team better - especially on offense - is quarterback Cody Clinton. Regarded as one of the top passers in south Florida, Clinton will emerge as one of the best, and college recruiters who have not had the chance to see what he can do, will have that opportunity during the spring and summer.

Here is a quarterback, who Coach Swain believes will be one of the best he has been around, and if you trace his career back through the years, he has had some impressive signal callers.

Clinton threw for 1,142 yards a year ago. That included 83 for 121 with 16 touchdowns and the confidence he would be a player who everyone would look at this coming season.

STRENGTHS: In the two games that I had the opportunity to watch him, Clinton was impressive. While he was an impressive prospect as a passer, his ability to run the ball and step out of the pocket was also something that I really liked about him.

His 414 yards and 5 TD against state-rated Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer and Jupiter gave me an idea of what he can do against quality competition that had speed and could apply enough pressure on Clinton to force him to pull all of his tricks out of the bag.

At the FloridaKids.us/Perfect Competition Camp/Combine that we hosted back in March, I had the chance to watch Clinton throw the ball during drills and competition. His release was quick, he looked off his first receiver and made sure that his balls were easy to catch.

Some things that people don’t understand in a camp setting is quarterbacks are not familiar with the receivers they are throwing to, so there is a period of adjustment. I truly believe that Cody makes those adjustments so well.

WHAT HE NEEDS TO WORK ON: Getting to throw more long balls and stretching the defenses is essential at the next level. Colleges want to know that you have the ability to throw a good long ball as well as mix it up intermediate and short balls.

OVERALL: While he will be an exceptional football players, Clinton will also have an option as a baseball player.

Baseball is a sport where he is regarded as one of the top prospects in Palm Beach County. This season, he led the area in hitting, first in doubles, second in runs scored and runs driven in and third in homers.

COLLEGES ON THE HORIZON: While there are a number of schools who have started to show interest, you can believe that the spring and summer will start to bring in offers.

University of Miami is his first choice, which is something that plenty of talented quarterbacks look at. But the Hurricanes also have company as he will be selling his two-sport prowess to schools such as Florida State, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and the University of Central Florida.

And thank you for noticing TRhit... I really appreciate the support. We won our first round playoff game for the first time in four years, so I'd say that's an accomplishment. And I did well, but the whole team certainly heplped support it all. It was definitely our best performance to date.

While I believe this was directed at your football talents, it will apply for baseball also.

Good luck. I have a feeling you'll find a place you like.
