My son Chris committed to West Virginia State University in June. WVSU is a DII College located in Institute, WV and is about 35 miles from our home. It is a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and won the Conference Baseball Tournament this year; receiving the Conference's automatic bid to the DII Eastern Regional where they were two and out. The Head Coach for the last 27 years, Cal Bailey, is 60+ years old and a member of the West Virgina Baseball Hall of Fame. Yet he was unable to strike me out even once in several games when I played against him in an Independent League one season 30+ years ago [I like to remind him of that from time to time].
Chris was awarded the "Promise Scholarship" by the State of West Virginia due to his GPA*4.0* and his ACT Test Score *28*. This Scholarship will pay for all his tuition and fees at WVSU. In addition he received the "Valedictorian Scholarship" from WVSU as he was Valedictorian of his 2007 High School Class. This Scholarship will pay for his room and board as long as he stays in on campus housing ["NO son, you can't stay in an apartment unless of course you want to get a job and not play summer ball."] He received no money for baseball.
Chris ended the 31 game 2007 High School Season batting .452 with 10 doubles, 5 triples, 5 home runs and 24 base on balls while striking out only 7 times in 129 plate appearences. He scored 41 runs, stole 23 bases out of 24 attempts [bad call] and had 24 RBI's [thanks in part to 2 grand slams] while batting lead-off. And just to infuriate TR Hit even further and to keep Haverdad happy, his OBP was .558 and his SLG .788 making his OPS a whopping 1.346. But statistics are meaningless.
Chris was selected to the Little Kanawha Conference first team for the third straight year, was named Conference Player of the year by the coaches and was named West Virginia AA Schools First Team All State infield by the State Sport's Reporters. He was selected by the West Virginia Baseball Coaches Association to participate in the annual North-South Senior All Star Game. All in all, a very good year.
As for more detalis about why this college vs others we were interested in and pursued, still others interested in him that we did not pursue and lessons learned in this whole recruitment/showcasing process, I hope to write an insightful and valuable treatise on the subject soon and post it on this website in the hope that it promotes discussion and ferments thought for those interested. But for now I am just happy that it is over and Chris is where he wants to be.
Good luck to everyone still unsigned and Many Thanks from both Chris and I are directed to the cadre of great people on this website that helped us through this process. You know who you are.

TW344,
Congratulations on Chris signing with West Virginia State University. The have quite an impressive baseball reputation. I went to the WVSU website and read the article on your son’s signing-- quite impressive accomplishments in all his sports. Did I read it right that Coach Bailey attended the same high school as Chris ---- only 40 years apart?

I just wanted everyone to read about coach Bailey’s record ---- as a college coach. However, they failed to mention his "flawed" pitching record against you Big Grin

Bailey’s collegiate coaching record now stands at an unbelievable 769-370-3 (.675), ranking him among the nation’s all-time winningest active collegiate coaches. His career mark in conference competition is an even more phenomenal 459-98 (.824), tops in WVIAC annals.
I waited before filing this post until everyone who had something to say had said it. I look at these names and see my best and most enthusiastic supporters on this site. I alos see people who had the most intelligent and thoughtful postings on this site. And many of you fall into both catagories.
All of you were truly a godsend to me and provided me with great information. I wish to thank you each individually.

HaverDad: Thank you so much for your post. I have always felt that we are kindred spirits in some way. I hope to meet you some day.
I will do my best to "savor every moment" as I have been able to do these past 5 years with my early retirement. OPS is truly the best offensive indicator of future success as we both know. And stats are certainly not meaningless but are, instead the most meaningful of all. Thanks for everything and best of luck to you and yours.

BeenthereIL: Thank you for the "congrats" and thanks for all the great advice. You have helped more people than you know; myself included. Good luck to you and yours.

ClevelandDad: Thanks for the "big congrats". After looking at DI and DII schools all over the Southern US, Chris found what he wanted right at home. Thanks for all the PM's and your sage advice. Good luck to you and yours.

Tiger Paw Mom: What can I say about you. You were the first to make me feel welcome on the site. When I got upset with the views of the neanderthals, you helped me through that. Your willingness to share ALL your experiences [good and bad] have helped so many people. Thanks for everything and good luck to you and yours.

lafmom: Thanks so much for the "congratulations and best wishes". Without your willingness to spend the amount of time and effort it takes to keep this thing going, none of this would be possible. I am so thankful for your efforts and your excellent comments and advice. Please take a few minutes to remind yourself how many people have been able to make the right decision for themsleves and their famlily as a direct result of your superhuman efforts. Thank you again. Best of luck to you and yours.

Bee: Thanks for the "congrats". Though we have sometimes disagreed, I have enjoyed your posts and found them to be thouughtprovoking and valuable. Thanks again for your assistance. Good luck to you and yours.

Krakatoa: Thanks for the "ATTA BOY" and the best wishes. Thanks also for the great advice that enabled me to work through this process. I read all your posts carefully. Good luck to you and yours.

Bum: Thanks for your post. Your right about town pride. Chris and another boy are the first boys out of our Little League program in 20 years to sign with a college baseball team. It has, among other things, re-invigorated our boys LL program. Thanks for your willingness to share your considerable experience and insight on this site. I have been greatly helped by your posts.

20dad: Thanks for the "great job". Although my son's talent certainly helped, your posts were very helpful to us in getting him to this point. Thanks again for your willingness to take on the tuff issues and provide excellent advice.

Fungo: Thanks so much for you comments. You, like TPM, were one of the first to welcome me on site. For those of us who know, please continue to speak softly but carry a big, BIG stick.
Coach Bailey's record is impressive but his dedication to his players is unbelievable. Chris played on two summer teams this summer and Coach Bailey watched him play in at least 6 games AFTER HE HAD COMMITTED to WVSU. He would wait after the game and talk to Chris about this or that. No wonder Coach Bailey does so well.
Chris attended and graduated from a consolidated High School that in 1993 consolidated the only two High Schools in one particular West Virginia County. Coach Bailey had graduated from one of the school's some 40+ years ago. Coach Bailey was "born and raised" about 15 miles from where Chris was raised.
Thanks so much for your postings over the years. They have been invaluable to me and my son.

Doc_K:

Thanks for the "Congrats". And thank you for your insightful postings. You have been a great help to me through this whole process.

A special thanks to PG Staff who provided great baseball insight which I shared with my son and others. Thanks to all the people on the Hitting and Fieldng sites for the same reason. And thanks to my fellow sabermaticians on the Stats site. We know what the truth really is.

Finally, thanks to everyone who had anything to do with this site; named and unnamed. It is this eclectic mix of personalities, experiences and beliefs that gives this website its most unique and valuable feature.

TW344, I am fairly new to the site, but have also found great advice and encouragement as I try to encourage my son. I will look forward to reading your "treatise" on the process of recruiting and finding that perfect fit. I keep telling myself patience, patience its soooo early. Sounds like your son has worked hard at everything...best of luck to him.

TW - So sorry for missing this original post and a hearty congrats to and obviously proud dad and fellow "OH/KY/PA/WV" webster!!!

I noticed your comment above and just wanted to say that, IMHO, the money he earned would make a parent even more proud. Sure it's nice to say our child got "money for _________ (insert sport)". But I'm even prouder to say they got it for working their tail off in the classroom!

Congrats again! clapping
