We just returned from Cooperstown Dreams Park with my youngest son. I had never been there before and always wondered how it worked with each team bringing an umpire.

At the opening orientation meeting, the announcer brought in all the umpires (over 100) and we all gave them a loud round of applause. I joked to one of my fellow coaches that would be the last time you hear anyone applauding the umpires this week (somewhat in jest!)

I'm here to tell you, I have never been around a more wonderful group of people. These men and women donated their time to come to NY, sleep in those bunk beds and umpire all of those games. Every last one of them appeared to be having just as much fun as the players.

If any of you from this site were in NY during the 7/4 week, THANK YOU!!!!!

My son's team was lucky enough to go in '06. We were asked to give a ride to a nice gentleman from Albany who somehow got stranded at the airport. We gave him a ride into town and talked baseball the whole way. A potentially uncomfortable situation (with a complete stranger and our whole family) turned into a great time.

It was also helpful to have someone on board who knew the way.

Our team made it all the way to the final 8. It was pretty 'unique' to see a full 6 man crew doing a game on a field with 200' fences. Seemed like the OF umps were really just back-up base umpires...

The best part was that were all there because they wanted to be. Everyone in that park loved baseball and was happy to be a part of it. We eliminated some team from the east coast who had seeded in the 80's. When we won the next game, they all gave our team a standing ovation and made a tunnel of hands for our boys to go through. We had several big kids (6' or better), but they were still 12U and didn't know quite how to react. Our parents had to tell the boys to go say THANK YOU.

It was one of those boys becoming men moments...

If you ever have the chance to go, DO IT
