Question about LOI. My son is being recruited by a local NAIA school and they'd like him to sign a Letter of Intent next week; also has just been recently contacted by D2 school in the South who have requested transcripts, stats, baseball video, and asked if he is registered with NCAA clearinghouse (he is). Question is if he does sign NAIA letter of intent and then NCAA D2 school (or any other D1 - D3 school) asks him to come there does the NAIA LOI prevent him from going to D2 school unless he gets a release?

Is this LOI just for the school, or the "National Letter of Intent"?

Reason I'm asking is that my son signed with an NAIA school a couple of years ago. He signed a "letter of intent" with the school. However the school was not enrolled in the National Letter of Intent program. For some reason I was thinking that the NAIA was outside that program.

In my son's case I don't think there was anything that would have stopped him from changing his mind and going to another school. However there are certainly ethical issues and I feel strongly that you should honor the commitment. My son's school used the letter of intent as a "contract" to stipulate the scholarship terms.

If you sign with a JC or an NAIA School, it means you will not sign with another JC or NAIA School. You can then sign with any NCAA School as well.

While this is legal, it is not fair to mislead the Juco or NAIA school. I suggest telling the NAIA School upfront... "I'm going here unless I get a good offer from DI or DII school". They may not like to hear that, but they will appreciate the honesty.

Agreed. It's better to be upfront.
