Do academic or institutional awards a a NAIA school count against the athletic team offering an athletic scholarship or is the academic award separate from the athletic scholarship?
My son is a freshman at an NAIA school this year as a freshman. If I remember correctly, he received athletic monies and academic monies. They were seperate from each other.
I hope I have answered your question. If not, please ask more. I am here every day!
Did I hear that at NAIA schools, there are no limits to the number of athletic grants like those in NCAA (11.7 DI) and the scholastic requirements are also less restrictive?
younggun, thanks for the welcome! Yes, you answered my question. He has an offer from a D2 school where the academic award ($8500) had to be taken on by the baseball team as part of the athletic scholarship because his GPA isn't a 3.3 or higher. Another BIG reason why kids need to perform their absolute best in the classroom! I thought NAIA didn't count the academic award against the baseball team, so thanks for confirming that. By the way, can you tell me what kind of offers your son got from NAIA schools? He has 2 on the table right now, but I think they are a little on the low side.
Homerun - A fully funded NAIA baseball program has 12 scholarships to work with. As with NCAA D1 and D2, some are fully funded and some aren't. There is no clearinghouse that athletes have to register with.
The school's policy for athletic scholarships could be affecting the offer, as well, so you may want to check that out. My son is a freshman at an NAIA school. His school has a maximum of about 28% athletic scholarship (I didn't include books in the cost as it varies so much, so you can lower that some if you want to). That would be reserved for the best pitchers and such. He is an outfielder, so he is a ways down the list. His total "don't have to pay it back" amount in the aid package was about 47% (15% athletic, 21.5% academic, 10.5% grants/work study). There were also various loans that add up to about 24% of costs. He picked the school for more than just athletic reasons and the goal was just to make sure it was affordable and fit his goals.
