March 10, 2009
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman Zach Tobolowsky of the Yale baseball team has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week, as announced today by the league office. In the first three games of his collegiate career, Tobolowsky hit .538 (7-13) with three home runs and five runs batted in. He posted a 1.231 slugging percentage and did not commit an error while splitting time between left field, right field and second base.
In the season opener against Wagner on March 8, Tobolowsky notched his first career hit with a two-out single in the sixth inning. Later in the day, against hosts Maryland-Baltimore County, he racked up another two-out hit in the form of his first career home run and RBI.
In Monday's 17-11 victory over the Retrievers, Tobolowsky went 5-for-7 with two home runs and four RBI. He started the Bulldogs on the right track, leading off the contest with a homer. Then in the third inning, with the score tied, the Dallas, Texas native hit another round tripper, this one coming with two out and two runners on base. Tobolowsky led off both the sixth and seventh inning with singles, scoring a run in the sixth. He picked up his second two-out hit of the game, and his fourth of the week, with a single in the top of the ninth.
Tobolowsky is the first Yale player to earn Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors since Ryan Lavarnway shared the weekly award in March of 2006.
