.

We have one son who was an '07 grad from the Air Force Academy (currently playing in the Phillies Organization) and one son currently the starting SS for the Naval Academy ( a rising Junior).

We can start out with...

How old is your son?
How much does he know about Service Academies?
Has he been scouted by the USNA Baseball Staff?
Does he realize this is not "a normal college experience"?

I guess that makes us the Naval Cavalry.

Start with a Google search of

and then go to

, and ask as many questions as you wish...

Thank you all.
My son is a rising senior on the young side for his grade - 16
He knows nothing about Service Academies
He received a phone call from the USNA coach
And no, he does not realize Navy is not a "normal college experience".
I am trying to educate myself so I can help him see the full picture. I think there is a lot to know and I am starting from scratch. What GPA/Grades do they look for? Is high school ROTC important?
What size is the incoming frosh class? I cant seem to find answers to the many questions I have. Any websites I should be reading?
AcademyDad - your sons sure look handsome in their uniforms! You must be very proud!
If your son is a recruited athlete to a service academy, he is subject to a completely different admissions scrutiny than the mainstream applicant.

They do have to possess good grades, usually no low ACT scores below 21. Just like any other school, it seems as if the coach has to make a case for admission. Standards are sliding depending on the enthusiasm of the coach.

Although ROTC would look good on the application, not necessary.

For the right person, a service academy is the best thing they can do to put them on a track for success with the rest of their life. For the wrong person, it can be miserable and short lived. Just like you hear in most sage advice, it's about fit, and this is probably more true at a service academy than anywhere else. My best advice is for you and your son, and Mom too if she's in the picture, is to take an official visit. There's just no substitute for some face time with coaches. players and midshipmen.

Best of luck to your son and family in your process!

Also, I would be derilict in my duties if I didn't add...GO ARMY! Big Grin

A math/science brain can be quite helpful at the Naval Academy.

According to a recruiting email my son received last year, the Naval Academy education is valued at $250,000 and students receive full tuition plus an $820 monthly salary.

The baseball team competes in the Patriot League, and they have won 8 Championships in the last 14 years.

I thought that statistic out of whack, so I went back and checked Patriot League records, and Navy has won or tied the PL in baseball 5 times in the last 14 years.
