Tried to search and see if I could find any guidance here but didn't see anything. Son is freshman in college. Worked with my sister last summer as a paid intern.. gained some entrepreneurial and marketing experience and was able to garner some interest as a model. Hey, I know its not very "manly".. but he's a good looking kid.. great physique and about 6'3". Not a bad way to make some money. Would be a great opportunity to make some money towards college over the summer. How would the NCAA view something like this if he did some modeling for any of the sports apparel companies? Would he have to decline any of those type of jobs and maybe only consider the H&Ms, GQ mag, etc... the fashion type jobs. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

I don't think it would be an issue as it is a paid internship. Athletes work internships all the time in the off season, at the school, inside or outside the school. My son worked a number of internships that ranged from a physics accelerator lab to retail to designing blades on a steam turbine.
You can call the NCAA to remove all doubt.1 (877) 262-1492.
Interesting question. Know of a local HS kid/athlete that did some local modeling for sports apparel (for local retail chain) and don't think it had any impact on amateur status. If the kid was the top basketball player in college (i.e. recognizable) then it might be an issue but I would find it hard to believe that your average NCAA athlete would get in trouble - but as fenwaysouth suggests, a direct call is probably worthwhile.
Not to pry, but when you say "some money", are you being coy? I was shocked what the HS kid got for hanging out for 6 hours. True he only did only get a few days for that one job, but the pay scale was easily 10x minimum wage. I imagine if you end up in the pages of GQ, the multiple gets much bigger.
I don't know if things have changed, but back in the day Steve Alford got in trouble for posing for a charity sorority calendar. You would have thought he was steeling candy from kids mouths.
I wasn't sure if the advertising of a sports brand had any bearing. I mentioned GQ just to point towards the "mall fashion market" instead of Nike, UA and others..Will definitely make the call, thanks! and yes.. I was surprised as well at the money available... but its a crazy industry... he also has some interests in photography and one of the photographers he met and worked with charges in the ball park of 5k for a day of his services.... might have pull out my old wave and fan polaroid!!!
Nothing better than the old wave and fan polaroid with a package of fresh film!
Call the compliance officer at your school. Let them handle it. Get it all in writing and/or keep your email trail.
We did this for last summer with possible job opportunities since son wasn't able to play summer ball. They did ask how much he was expected to make.
